How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job Specification — Associate Mechanical Design Engineer (Building Services)

    Department

    Building Services / MEP Engineering

    Role Purpose

    The Associate Mechanical Design Engineer will support the delivery of high-quality mechanical building services design across a range of projects. The role will involve developing mechanical designs from concept through to detailed design and construction, working collaboratively with clients, architects, developers, main contractors, electrical engineers, and other project stakeholders.

    The successful candidate will have a sound understanding of building services engineering principles and be capable of taking responsibility for defined elements of projects, while continuing to develop their technical, managerial and commercial expertise.

    Key Responsibilities

    Mechanical Design

    ● Develop mechanical building services designs in accordance with project requirements, relevant standards, regulations and best practice.

    ● Undertake heating, cooling, ventilation, domestic water, drainage and other mechanical services calculations and designs as appropriate.

    ● Produce and review mechanical schematics, layouts, specifications, schedules and design calculations.

    ● Manage and develop a team of mechanical engineers

    ● Use appropriate design software such as hevacomp and tools to develop coordinated mechanical solutions.

    ● Ensure designs consider energy efficiency, sustainability, maintainability, buildability and whole-life performance.

    ● Review drawings and technical information produced by other team members.

    ● Assist with site surveys, inspections and investigations where required.

    Project Delivery

    ● Take responsibility for allocated mechanical design packages and deliver them to agreed timescales and budgets.

    ● Liaise with clients and other members of the design team to understand and resolve technical requirements.

    ● Attend design team meetings and contribute to technical discussions.

    ● Coordinate mechanical services with architectural, structural, electrical and other building services requirements.

    ● Assist with identifying and resolving design clashes and coordination issues.

    ● Support the preparation of technical reports, specifications, schedules and tender documentation.

    ● Assist with responding to technical queries during tender and construction stages.

    ● Undertake site visits and assist with inspections of mechanical installations.

    Quality, Compliance & Risk

    ● Ensure designs comply with applicable legislation, British Standards, CIBSE guidance, Building Regulations and project-specific requirements.

    ● Apply the company’s quality assurance procedures to all design work.

    ● Identify design risks and communicate them to the appropriate project lead.

    ● Support technical reviews and design checks.

    ● Maintain accurate project records and design documentation.

    Professional Development

    ● Continue to develop technical knowledge and understanding of mechanical building services engineering.

    ● Work towards professional registration with CIBSE or another relevant professional institution where appropriate.

    ● Seek feedback and take responsibility for personal development.

    ● Support and mentor junior engineers and graduates as experience develops.

    ● Keep up to date with emerging technologies, regulations, standards and sustainable engineering practices.

    Essential Qualifications & Experience

    ● Ideally a degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline.

    ● Relevant experience in mechanical building services design within a consultancy, contractor or multidisciplinary engineering environment.

    ● Good understanding of mechanical building services principles and design processes.

    ● Experience producing mechanical calculations, drawings, specifications and technical documentation.

    ● Working knowledge of relevant British Standards, Building Regulations and CIBSE guidance.

    ● Experience using relevant engineering/design software, such as AutoCAD, Revit and/or other BIM platforms is benefical but not essential

    ● Strong written and verbal communication skills.

    ● Ability to manage priorities and deliver work to agreed deadlines.

    ● Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

    Success in the role will be demonstrated through:

    ● Delivery of accurate, coordinated and technically robust designs.

    ● Completion of allocated design work within agreed programmes and budgets.

    ● Positive feedback from clients, project teams and senior engineers.

    ● Effective coordination with other disciplines.

    ● Compliance with company quality procedures and relevant technical standards.

    ● Continued development towards professional registration.

    ● Increasing responsibility for technical packages and project delivery
