How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Senior Java Developer
    Location: Hybrid (Newcastle or Edinburgh - 1 day per month)
    Salary: £75,000 per annum
    Type: Permanent, Full-Time
     
    We are looking for an experienced Senior Java Developer to join a growing technology consultancy delivering innovative digital solutions for a diverse portfolio of clients.
     
    This is an excellent opportunity for a talented engineer who enjoys working across a variety of projects, partnering directly with clients, and helping organisations solve complex business challenges through technology. You'll play a key role in designing and delivering scalable, high-quality software solutions while collaborating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
     
    To be successful in this role, you must be within a commutable distance of either Newcastle or Edinburgh, with office attendance required approximately once per month.
     
    Key Responsibilities
    Design, develop and maintain enterprise-scale Java applications.
    Collaborate directly with clients to understand requirements and translate business needs into technical solutions.
    Contribute to solution design and technical architecture discussions.
    Develop clean, maintainable and performant code.
    Work within Agile delivery teams to deliver high-quality software solutions.
    Conduct code reviews and support best practice development standards.
    Mentor junior and mid-level developers.
    Collaborate with Product Owners, Business Analysts, QA Engineers and DevOps teams.
    Support continuous improvement initiatives across development processes and tooling.
    Stay current with emerging technologies and identify opportunities to enhance client solutions. Essential Skills & Experience
    Strong commercial experience developing applications using Java.
    Experience with modern Java frameworks including:
    Spring Boot
    Spring Framework
    Hibernate / JPA
    Experience designing and building RESTful APIs and microservices.
    Strong understanding of software engineering principles and best practices.
    Experience working within Agile software delivery environments.
    Proficiency with Git and modern development workflows.
    Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
    Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with clients and stakeholders.
    Experience working in a customer-facing, consultancy, or stakeholder-driven environment. Desirable Skills & Experience
    Experience working within Financial Services, Banking, FinTech, Insurance or Wealth Management environments.
    Previous consultancy or professional services experience.
    Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or GCP.
    Knowledge of containerisation technologies including Docker and Kubernetes.
    Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
    Understanding of event-driven architecture and messaging technologies.
    Exposure to modern front-end frameworks and technologies. AI & Automation Experience We are particularly interested in candidates who are embracing the latest advancements in software engineering and productivity tooling, including:

    AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, ChatGPT, Claude or similar technologies.
    Experience using AI to improve development efficiency, code quality and delivery outcomes.
    Exposure to AI-powered automation solutions.
    Experience integrating AI services, APIs or Large Language Models (LLMs) into applications.
    Interest in emerging AI technologies and their practical application within software development. About You You are a passionate software engineer who enjoys solving complex problems and delivering value to clients. You thrive in collaborative environments, communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, and take pride in producing high-quality technical solutions.
