How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer
    Location: Bedfordshire
    Salary: £40,000 to £50,000
    Employment Type: Permanent
Working Arrangements: Onsite working with some flexibility

We’re looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer who enjoys designing machines that move. If you thrive on solving mechanical challenges, developing intricate mechanisms, and creating systems that interact smoothly and reliably, this role offers the variety and technical depth you’ll enjoy.

    About the Role
You’ll be involved in the design and development of bespoke mechanical systems containing multiple moving parts, assemblies, and mechanisms. This includes motion systems, actuated components, and mechanically complex assemblies that require strong spatial awareness and an intuitive understanding of how machines behave.
This is a hands‑on design role where your work directly influences how equipment performs in real-world operation.

    Key Responsibilities
    - Design mechanical systems with moving parts, linkages, actuators, and motion control elements.
    - Develop mechanisms that integrate motors, drives, pneumatics, or other actuation methods.
    - Produce detailed 3D models, assemblies, and engineering drawings.
    - Work closely with production teams to resolve mechanical issues during build, testing, and commissioning.
    - Analyse mechanical interactions to prevent clashes, misalignments, and design-phase failures.
    - Contribute to continuous improvement of mechanical designs and engineering processes.

    What You’ll Bring
    - Strong understanding of mechanical movement, kinematics, and how components interact.
    - Experience designing machinery, mechanisms, or equipment with multiple moving parts.
    - Ability to foresee mechanical issues before they occur—excellent spatial and mechanical intuition.
    - Proficiency with 3D CAD tools and mechanical design principles.
    - Problem-solving mindset and willingness to get involved in hands-on engineering.
    - Enthusiasm to learn new systems, products, and mechanical disciplines.

    Nice-to-Have Experience
    - Exposure to automation, motion systems, or actuated machinery.
    - Experience with hydraulics, pneumatics, or thermal/mechanical systems.
    - Background in tooling, moulding, or precision mechanical assemblies.

    Who This Suits
    - Engineers who enjoy designing mechanisms rather than static components.
    - People who want variety across different types of machinery.
    - Junior to mid-level engineers with strong mechanical instincts and eagerness to grow.
    - Individuals who like seeing their designs built, tested, and refined.
