How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Freelance Quantity Surveyor - Clean & Foul Water Mains

    Location: Surrey
    Contract Type: Freelance / Contract
    Rate: £525-£625 per day PAYE
    Duration: Contract basis, with potential for extension

    Role Overview

    We are seeking an experienced Quantity Surveyor (QS) to support the commercial delivery of clean and foul water mains projects across Surrey.

    The successful candidate will take commercial ownership of allocated projects, working closely with project managers, delivery teams, subcontractors and clients to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently and profitably.

    This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced utilities QS with strong water-sector experience who is comfortable managing multiple projects within a busy delivery environment.

    Key Responsibilities

    Manage the commercial performance of clean and foul water mains projects from commencement through to completion.
    Prepare, manage and monitor project budgets, forecasts and cost/value reports.
    Manage subcontractor accounts, valuations, applications for payment and final accounts.
    Review and assess variations, compensation events, change orders and contractual entitlement.
    Ensure accurate cost reporting and forecasting throughout the project lifecycle.
    Monitor project expenditure against agreed budgets and identify commercial risks and opportunities.
    Support the preparation and submission of applications for payment.
    Manage commercial correspondence and maintain appropriate project records.
    Review subcontract and supplier terms and ensure compliance with contractual requirements.
    Work closely with operational teams to maximise commercial performance and minimise cost exposure.
    Assist with the resolution of commercial and contractual disputes where required.
    Provide accurate monthly commercial reporting to senior management.
    Ensure commercial processes, governance and procedures are followed.

    Experience Required

    Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor within the water/utilities sector.
    Strong experience delivering clean and/or foul water mains projects.
    Good understanding of NEC contracts and change management.
    Experience managing subcontractor accounts and commercial negotiations.
    Strong understanding of cost control, forecasting and project financial reporting.
    Ability to identify and manage commercial risks and opportunities.
    Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
    Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
    Strong IT and commercial reporting skills.

    Desirable

    Previous experience working on major water utility frameworks.
    Experience within the Thames Water region.
    NEC3/NEC4 experience.
    Relevant Quantity Surveying qualification or professional membership.
