How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    We are looking for a talented Managing Quantity Surveyor who has the skills and necessary experience to challenge, engage, influence and drive change.
    This is an integral and exciting opportunity lead a dedicated and enthusiastic team of Quantity Surveyors essential to the successful delivery of Major Projects and Programmes in AMP8 at Thames Water. You will oversee a contractor programme value of up to £400m per annum in AMP8, playing a vital role in ensure we deliver value and life’s essential service to Customers.

    What you’ll be doing as a Managing Quantity Surveyor

    Ensuring that Contractual Compliance is maintained on all Contracts
    Ensuring that appropriate processes are in place, reviewed and monitored for your Delivery Area and Team to ensure that Contractual Compliance is maintained and act as second point of escalation should any non-performance be identified and corrective actions implemented as necessary
    Developing and Advising on Procurement Strategies for your Delivery Area
    Assisting the Procurement and Supplier Management Team with the implementation of robust commercial processes with their Third-Party Suppliers and providing them with commercial support as and when required
    Commercial Relationship management with Direct Delivery Contractors
    Performance Reporting and Management of Team
    Ensure that in-life supplier value for money can be demonstrated
    Providing data for cost database to support estimating and Business Planning
    Management and development of Team Members including their progression towards chartership
    Ensuring that all payments are properly certified and processed in line with contracts
    Advising on the overall management and optimisation of budgets and spend
    Advising on Contractual duties and other tasks under assigned Contracts
    Providing Commercial Dispute Advice and resolving claims as required
    Ensure Team always maintain financial governance and provide expert input to financial and contract governance proposals.
    Supporting the Head of Commercial with the resolution of disputes and departmental strategy, as necessary.Base Location: Hybrid - Reading 
    Working Pattern or hours: 36 Hours
    What you should bring to the role

    To thrive in this role, the essential criteria you’ll need is:

    Hold a degree or a master’s in quantity surveying or equivalent
    Have a background in working in the civil engineering sector, such as transportation, nuclear, utilities or similar fields
    Be competent in line managing a team of up to 40 Quantity Surveyors of all levels and developing them to success
    Extensive experience in commercially managing a portfolio of projects both pre and post-contract
    Have experience in negotiating with suppliers on all commercial and contractual matters and applying judgment as to what constitutes an acceptable level of contractual risk and supply resilience
    Have strong Communication and the ability to bring numerous stakeholders together to bring opportunities to fruition
    Self-starter, resilient and tenacious under pressure
    Hold a full UK Driving license and have your transport
    You will need to be a good team player, who enjoys working as part of a busy team
    Chartered or detailed knowledge of the RICS
    Knowledge of water regulation (incl. OFWAT Price review methodology) would be desirableWhat’s in it for you?
