How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

HSB Technical is working with an established engineering business based in Portsmouth that designs and delivers complex, high-value electrical systems for the marine sector. Due to continued growth and a strong project pipeline, the business is seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Design Engineer to join its engineering team.

This is an excellent opportunity to take technical ownership of challenging electrical design projects, working from initial concept and requirements capture through detailed design, manufacture, installation, commissioning and final customer acceptance. The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering, production, project and customer teams to deliver reliable and compliant solutions. This role would suit someone with either an Motorsport / Automotive or Aerospace background.

As Senior Electrical Design Engineer, you will lead and support the development of electrical systems, producing accurate design documentation and ensuring solutions meet customer, regulatory and project requirements. You will provide technical guidance to other engineers, resolve design and integration issues and support projects throughout the full engineering lifecycle.

    Key responsibilities

Lead the electrical design of complex marine systems from concept through to production and commissioning.
Interpret customer requirements, technical specifications and statements of work, translating them into practical and compliant engineering solutions.
Produce and review electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, termination drawings, panel layouts, bills of materials and supporting technical documentation.
Complete electrical calculations, including cable sizing, load analysis, protection requirements, voltage drop and equipment selection.
Select appropriate electrical components and equipment, considering performance, reliability, availability, cost and whole-life support.
Support the integration of power distribution, control, automation, navigation, communications and auxiliary electrical systems as applicable to each project.
Undertake and contribute to design reviews, ensuring technical risks, interfaces and actions are identified and managed effectively.
Work closely with mechanical, software, systems, production and project engineering teams to ensure designs are fully integrated and suitable for manufacture and installation.
Provide technical support during build, installation, test and commissioning, investigating faults and resolving design or production issues efficiently.
Liaise with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders, representing the electrical engineering function in technical discussions and project meetings.
Ensure designs and documentation comply with relevant marine, electrical, safety, quality and regulatory standards.
Support continuous improvement by developing engineering processes, standardising documentation and sharing technical knowledge across the team.
Provide guidance, coaching and technical review support to junior engineers and designers where required.
    Experience and qualifications

A degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering or a closely related discipline.
Strong electrical design experience gained within Automotive or marine or defence or aerospace.
Demonstrable experience producing and checking electrical design drawings, schematics, cable schedules and technical documentation.
Good understanding of electrical power distribution, control systems, equipment integration, protection and cable selection.
Experience using an electrical CAD package such as AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN or an equivalent design platform.
Ability to read, interpret and work from complex customer requirements, engineering specifications and technical drawings.
Knowledge of relevant engineering standards, configuration control, change management and design assurance processes.
Strong fault-finding, analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to resolve technical issues in a structured manner.
Confident communicator who can work effectively with customers, suppliers, engineers, technicians and project stakeholders.
Able to manage competing priorities, maintain accurate documentation and deliver work to agreed quality, cost and programme requirements.
