How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

The Salvation Army is one of the oldest and most diverse providers of social services in the world, delivering its mission as a church and a charity in 134 countries. The Salvation Army Trustee Company (SATCo) is the corporate trustee of the trusts under which The Salvation Army operates in the UK. With an income of c.£300 million, the diversity of The Salvation Army’s UK programme is reflected in its charitable activities (from anti-human trafficking work to children and families work), the breadth of its group (including an ethical insurer and a housing association) and the extent of its physical assets (including a considerable property portfolio).

Role description; The Risk Management Committee (“the Committee”) is chaired by a non-executive director of SATCo and attended by senior operational personnel. The Committee plays a vital role in supporting SATCo’s governance responsibilities with a focus on overseeing and driving improvement in the risk management framework and reviewing strategic, operational, financial and regulatory risks. It also receives reports relating to safeguarding, health & safety and sudden deaths from its various sub-committees.

The Committee is currently looking for an external independent member to provide constructive challenge, objective oversight and specialist expertise, and to support the review of the charity’s risk management framework. The role provides a unique opportunity to support one of the UK’s leading providers of practical Christianity in action.

This is an unpaid voluntary role with reasonable expenses reimbursed. Individuals must be supportive of the Christian ethos of The Salvation Army.

    Person specification

We wish to appoint one independent member to the Committee, with the following demonstrable skills and expertise:

    • Experience at a senior level in risk management, preferably with committee and/or Board level experience
    • Experience in charity, public sector, regulated environments or large/complex organisations
    • Familiarity with current Charity Commission reporting requirements
    • Strong working knowledge or expertise of good practice in risk management, data analysis and compliance
    • Skills to work collaboratively while providing independent challenge in a constructive and insightful manner, and strong analytical and critical thinking
    • Independent and balanced judgement
    • Commitment to The Salvation Army’s values

    Time Commitment:

    • The Committee usually meets four times per year
    • Meetings generally take place during business hours at The Salvation Army’s Territorial Headquarters in Denmark Hill (SE5), with the option for members to join via Teams when required
    • Appointments are for an initial term of up to three years, renewable for up to two further three-year terms

This is an exciting and meaningful opportunity to contribute to the governance of one of the UK’s oldest and widely recognised Christian charities, whose vision is to achieve ‘fullness of life for all with Jesus’.

Application; Please supply the following to company.secretary@salvationarmy.org.uk:

    • A supporting statement, explaining how you believe your skills and experience match the requirements of the role, directly addressing the person specification
    • A comprehensive CV including details of your achievements in each previous role, and including details of two referees (who will not be contacted without your prior knowledge or consent)
