How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Power Systems Engineer

    Location: Fully Remote
    Rate: £65-£75 per hour
    IR35: Inside or Outside IR35

Carrington West is recruiting for an experienced Power Systems Engineer to provide specialist technical support across a range of electricity network and energy infrastructure projects.

This position is fully remote and would suit an engineer with a strong background in power system analysis who is comfortable taking ownership of technical studies, developing network models and presenting clear engineering conclusions to wider project teams.

The assignment can be structured on either an Inside or Outside IR35 basis, subject to the final scope and contractual arrangements.

    The Role

The successful engineer will undertake and support a broad range of electrical network studies, including:
    · Load flow and power flow analysis.
    · Short-circuit and fault level assessments.
    · Transient stability and dynamic performance studies.
    · Harmonic analysis and power quality investigations.
    · Electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies.
    · Arc flash analysis and incident energy assessments.
    · Earthing and grounding studies, including touch and step potential assessments where applicable.
    · Protection grading, coordination and protection performance studies.
    · Voltage profile and reactive power assessments.
    · Grid connection and network compliance studies.
    · Network impact and system performance assessments.

You will also be responsible for developing and checking electrical network models, reviewing engineering calculations and technical reports, and providing specialist input into HV and EHV electrical design activities.

The role will require close coordination with electrical engineers, designers, consultants and other technical disciplines to resolve network issues, identify engineering risks and support project decisions.

    What We're Looking For

    · Strong experience in power systems engineering within electricity transmission, distribution, generation, renewable energy or major infrastructure environments.
    · Practical experience carrying out a range of power system studies and interpreting study results.
    · Good working knowledge of software packages such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP, PSCAD or equivalent platforms.
    · Experience with load flow, fault level and short-circuit analysis.
    · Knowledge of transient stability, harmonics and EMT analysis.
    · Experience with protection coordination and network performance studies.
    · Exposure to arc flash and earthing studies would be advantageous.
    · Strong understanding of HV and EHV electrical networks.
    · Experience supporting grid connection or network compliance activities would be beneficial.
    · Ability to work independently, manage technical workloads and clearly communicate engineering findings.
    · Strong technical report writing and documentation skills.
    · Previous experience on UK electricity infrastructure projects would be advantageous.

This opportunity would suit a Power Systems Engineer looking for a flexible remote contract with exposure to technically varied network studies and major electricity infrastructure programmes.
