How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Software Engineer / Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, Hybrid / £35,000 - £45,000 Per Annum D.O.E.

    Required Skills & Experience of the Software Engineer:

    Strong Python: Writing and maintaining data pipelines.
    Able to solve complex problems.
    Excellent written, oral and visual communication skills to explain complex information.
    Enjoys and works well in a team-based environment, and is self-motivated to individually succeed.
    Understands and implements best practices of modern Software Engineering including Agile
    Software Development, Automated Testing, Configuration Management principles and DevOps.
    Has the rigour and care to manage and control changes to development, testing and production environments.
    Desirable skills & experience:

    C# / .NET: experience building libraries and command-line tools with .NET 8.0+.
    Comfortable reading and safely modifying existing/legacy codebases; good documentation and PR practices.
    SQL Databases: PostgreSQL and SQLite experience (schema design, migrations, basicperformance tuning).
    Orchestration & data engineering: experience with workflow/orchestration tools (Prefect or similar) and distributed task queuing (e.g. Celery, RabbitMQ).
    Testing & automation: writing unit and basic integration tests as well as automating test runs as part of CI pipelines e.g. GitHub Actions.
    AI-assisted development: comfortable using AI-assisted tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot) to increase productivity, while validating and testing any AI-generated code and understanding its limitations.
    Experience building or maintaining REST APIs, microservices, event-driven services, and message-driven patterns.
    Containerisation: experience using Docker and deploying containerised applications
    Nice to have:

    GIS & point-cloud processing: GDAL/PDAL, GeoPandas, Open3D, LAS/LAZ/Raster/Vectorhandling, spatial transforms and analysis.
    TypeScript/JavaScript for developing front-end dashboards and user interfaces.
    Packaging & distribution: familiarity with publishing and versioning packages (NuGet and/or PyPI).
