How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

We currently have a vacancy for two Bus Control Centre Assistant Managers to join our Mobility Services Team.

These are brand new roles, created to assist in managing a new centralised bus control centre function currently in development, as part of the transition to a franchised bus network in West Yorkshire. As Bus Control Centre Assistant Manager, you will be responsible for managing the staffing and coordination of the bus control centre to ensure an efficient operating structure during the normal operating hours of function, including the use and application of bespoke IT systems to monitor key team outputs.

In this high-profile role, you will have a real opportunity to apply your knowledge and experience to help shape and build centralised bus control across West Yorkshire. Working closely with colleagues across the Combined Authority and its partners, a key part of your responsibilities as Bus Control Centre Assistant Manager will be to manage the outputs relating to emergency road closures and understand the impact of road closures on daily operations. Your role will also be integral to supporting and influencing the future growth and development of the service, while helping to deliver the mayor’s promise of a better connected West Yorkshire through the Weaver Network.

This role will operate on a shift pattern, however further detail of this in operational terms is still to be finalised. If you are undertaking shift work, you will receive a shift allowance of no less than 12.5% of salary. Shift work is a pattern of work with defined start and end times over the course of the day which are defined blocks of time, rotated across the course of the day and week and vary over a set period of time.

Please note, interviews will be held Wednesday 16 September.

    · Free greener travel across West Yorkshire – Cover your commute sustainably with unlimited free bus and rail travel using the MCard (Zones 1–5).

    · Secure your future – Benefit from a highly competitive Local Government Pension Scheme.

    · Investing in you –Take advantage of supported professional development, regular training, and up to 3 paid volunteering days per year.

    · Grow with us – Incremental salary progression for most roles and annual cost of living increases.

    · Family first – We offer enhanced parental and bereavement leave, plus other family-friendly policies to support you when it matters most.

    · Your wellbeing, our priority – Access 24/7 free confidential counselling services and the Headspace app for you and up to 5 family or friends.

    · Modern workspace in a prime location – Work in bright, contemporary offices just a 2-minute walk from Leeds Train Station, fully equipped with the latest tech.

    The Role

Reporting into the Bus Control Centre Manager, your key responsibilities will include:

    · To manage the outputs relating to emergency road closures and respond to daily operational challenges including recovery of the bus network after an incident or road closure.

    · Liaising with bus operators and local districts on maintaining a punctual service across the weaver network and populating a list of excusing events which will be shared with the contract management team.

    · To provide summaries and data sets of road closures and events into meaningful bus operation data to understand the impact of road closures on daily operation, including assessments of early and later running.

Please review the Role Profile on our website for more information about the responsibilities.

    About You

You will have the following key skills, attributes, education, and experience:

    • Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of control room operations and procedures, including RAG processes and the requirements of the Civil Contingencies Act 2004.

    • Previous experience of planning and prioritising workloads within a control room environment, managing competing priorities and responding effectively to operational incidents or emergencies, with the ability to remain calm under pressure.

    • Experience of managing and motivating a team, including staff scheduling and resource allocation.

    • Extensive knowledge of bus operations, bus networks and the geographical area in which services operate.

    • Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with external partners, highways authorities and other third parties to support service recovery and operational performance.
