How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Electrical Tester (Rail Rolling Stock)

    Location: Milton Keynes
    Salary: £49,000 per annum + 33% Shift Allowance
    Job Type: Full Time, Permanent

    About the Role

    We are seeking an experienced Electrical Tester to join a growing rail engineering team based in Milton Keynes. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled electrical professional with a strong background in fault finding, diagnostics, and static testing of complex electrical systems.

    The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out electrical and functional testing on rail vehicles and associated systems to ensure vehicles are safe, compliant, and ready for service. You will work closely with production, engineering, quality, and commissioning teams to diagnose faults, verify installations, and support vehicle delivery programmes.

    Candidates with experience from rail, automotive, aerospace, defence, heavy vehicle, marine, bus and coach manufacturing, or other safety-critical engineering environments are encouraged to apply.

    Key Responsibilities

    Conduct electrical and functional testing of rail vehicle systems and components.
    Perform static testing activities in accordance with engineering specifications and testing procedures.
    Diagnose and rectify electrical faults using approved fault-finding techniques.
    Interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, technical drawings, and engineering documentation.
    Test and verify the correct operation of:

    Passenger door systems
    Lighting systems
    HVAC equipment
    Battery systems
    Control circuits
    Communication systems
    Braking interfaces
    Auxiliary electrical systems

    Use a range of electrical test equipment, including multimeters, insulation resistance testers, and specialist rail testing equipment.
    Record and document test results accurately and maintain quality records.
    Investigate test failures and support root cause analysis activities.
    Work alongside engineering and production teams to resolve defects and support continuous improvement initiatives.
    Assist with commissioning and validation activities when required.
    Ensure all work is completed in accordance with company quality standards, rail industry regulations, and health and safety requirements.
    Support vehicle acceptance and readiness for customer service.
    Essential Requirements

    Previous experience as an Electrical Tester, Test Technician, Electrical Fitter, Commissioning Technician, Diagnostic Technician, or similar role.
    Proven experience of electrical fault finding and static testing on complex electrical or electro-mechanical systems.
    Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
    Experience using electrical testing and diagnostic equipment.
    Strong understanding of electrical systems, controls, and fault diagnosis techniques.
    Knowledge of safe isolation procedures and electrical testing practices.
    Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
    Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
    Commitment to maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and workmanship.
    Suitable Industry Backgrounds

    We welcome applications from candidates with experience in:

    Rail rolling stock manufacturing, maintenance, overhaul, refurbishment, or commissioning.
    Automotive manufacturing and vehicle testing, including electric vehicles.
    Aerospace and avionics testing environments.
    Defence and military vehicle systems.
    Bus and coach manufacturing or maintenance.
    Heavy commercial vehicles (HGVs) and specialist vehicles.
    Marine electrical systems and vessel commissioning.
    Industrial manufacturing, control panel testing, and automated production equipment.
    Any other safety-critical engineering environment involving complex electrical systems, diagnostics, testing, or commissioning.
    Desirable Requirements

    Previous experience of fault finding and static testing on rail carriages or rolling stock.
    NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, BTEC, HNC/HND, or equivalent electrical qualification.
    Experience working within manufacturing, maintenance, commissioning, or refurbishment environments.
    Understanding of railway standards and quality assurance processes.
    Knowledge of vehicle communication systems, control circuits, and electro-mechanical equipment.
