How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Hours: Full-Time, Term Time Only
    Setting: Specialist Secondary SEMH School

Are you a passionate and resilient Secondary Teacher looking for an opportunity to make a genuine difference to young people who need additional support? Do you have the creativity, patience and confidence to engage pupils who may have experienced barriers to mainstream education? If so, we'd love to hear from you.

TeacherActive is working with a welcoming and supportive specialist SEMH school in Colchester that is looking to recruit a Secondary SEMH Teacher.

The school provides a nurturing and structured environment for secondary-aged pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Pupils may have experienced difficulties within mainstream education and require a more individualised approach to help them re-engage with learning, build confidence and achieve positive outcomes.

    About the Role

You'll work closely with Learning Support Assistants, senior leaders and other professionals to create a safe, consistent and positive learning environment.

Building strong relationships will be at the heart of this role. The successful Teacher will understand that behaviour can be a form of communication and will use a calm, consistent and trauma-informed approach to support pupils with emotional regulation, behaviour and engagement.

    Responsibilities

Plan, prepare and deliver engaging lessons across the secondary curriculum.
Adapt teaching and resources to meet individual pupils' needs and abilities.
Support pupils with a range of SEMH and additional learning needs.
Build positive, consistent and trusting relationships with young people.
Support pupils who may display challenging behaviour or have difficulty engaging with education.
Promote positive behaviour, emotional regulation, resilience and independence.
Create a safe, structured and inclusive classroom environment.
Monitor, assess and record pupil progress.
Support pupils' academic, social and emotional development.
Work closely with Learning Support Assistants and other professionals.
Contribute to EHCP targets, individual learning plans and pupil reviews where required.
Maintain high standards of safeguarding and pupil wellbeing.

    What We're Looking For

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or a relevant recognised teaching qualification.
    Experience teaching secondary-aged pupils.
A patient, resilient and compassionate approach.
Strong behaviour and classroom management skills.
The confidence to support pupils who may present challenging or dysregulated behaviour.
    Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
The ability to differentiate lessons for pupils working at different academic levels.
A genuine passion for helping young people overcome barriers to education.
Reliability, flexibility and the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Previous experience within SEMH, SEND, alternative provision, PRU or specialist education would be highly beneficial.

    In Return, You Can Expect

A welcoming and supportive specialist education environment.
    Ongoing professional development and support.
The opportunity to develop valuable SEMH and SEND teaching experience.
    Competitive rates of pay.
    Support from experienced education professionals.
A varied and rewarding role where no two days are the same.
The opportunity to make a lasting impact on young people's education, confidence and future.
Our staff are paid on a PAYE basis, so you can rest assured that you're paying the right level of Tax and National Insurance, with no hidden admin charges coming out of your hard-earned pay.
