How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Multi Skilled Operative
Location: Chicksands Barracks, Carver Barracks, Bassingbourn Barracks & RAF Henlow
Salary: Up to £30,000 per annum
    Contract: Full Time, Permanent
Working Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday
Clearance: BPSS, with eligibility to obtain SC clearance

    The Opportunity
Our client is looking for a practical and hardworking Multi Skilled Operative to join their Direct Delivery team, working across a group of Defence sites including Chicksands, Carver Barracks, Bassingbourn Barracks and RAF Henlow. This is a genuinely hands-on, site-based maintenance role, suited to someone who enjoys getting stuck into practical work, takes pride in what they do and is keen to develop their skills within facilities management. You will work across the sites within a defined 20-mile radius, attending one location per day based on a planned rota and scheduled workload. A work van and fuel card will be provided, with your daily site and tasks confirmed in advance. The role will involve a combination of planned preventative maintenance, reactive repairs and small works, covering a broad range of general building and facilities maintenance activities.

    Key Responsibilities

Carry out planned, reactive and general maintenance tasks across a range of Defence and commercial properties.
Undertake minor plumbing, general building repairs and other semi-skilled maintenance activities.
Complete filling, painting and decorating works to maintain the appearance and condition of buildings.
Carry out fire alarm testing and weekly water flushing in line with site requirements and health and safety procedures.
Install and repair items such as notice boards and other fixtures and fittings.
Identify defects and determine appropriate repair solutions where required.
Maintain high standards of presentation, safety and functionality across the sites.
Complete tasks using appropriate hand tools and equipment.
Record completed works, materials used and any issues identified using PDA systems or paper-based processes.
Liaise professionally with customers, site users and other stakeholders while carrying out works.
Work independently when lone working and provide support to colleagues where tasks require two-person attendance.
Ensure all work is completed safely, professionally and in line with relevant procedures.

    About You
This role would suit someone with previous experience in a handyperson, maintenance operative, semi-skilled or general building maintenance environment, but our client is also happy to consider candidates who are earlier in their career and have the right attitude, practical ability and willingness to learn. You do not need to be an expert across every trade. What matters is that you are hands-on, reliable, hardworking and keen to develop your skills. If you are someone who takes pride in your work, is comfortable using hand tools and enjoys solving practical problems, this could be a great opportunity to build a long-term career in facilities management. Additional experience in areas such as plumbing, carpentry, decorating or general building maintenance would be advantageous, but full multi-skilled experience is not essential.

    You will also need:

    A full UK driving licence.
A practical approach and confidence using hand tools.
The ability to work independently and manage your own daily workload.
The ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
A flexible and adaptable approach to different tasks and environments.
Good problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn.
    Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
A professional approach when dealing with customers and site stakeholders.
Eligibility to obtain BPSS and SC clearance.
