How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Principal Mechanical Design Engineer – Water Industry

    Lead mechanical design across major UK water and wastewater infrastructure programmes

    Adepto Technical Recruitment is working with a leading engineering and consultancy organisation to recruit multiple Principal Mechanical Design Engineers for long-term water industry frameworks across the UK.

    This is an excellent opportunity for experienced Mechanical Design Engineers looking to take a principal-level role, with significant technical responsibility across major AMP8 and future AMP9 programmes.

    The Role

    As a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer, you will lead mechanical design delivery across major water and wastewater infrastructure projects.

    You will take ownership of mechanical design outputs for pumping systems, aeration systems and process plant equipment, from optioneering and concept development through detailed design and construction support.

    Working within multidisciplinary teams, you will coordinate mechanical design with civil, structural, electrical, process and ICA disciplines while providing technical assurance across major capital projects.

    Your responsibilities will include:

    * Leading mechanical design delivery across major water infrastructure projects

    * Designing and specifying pumping systems, aeration systems and associated equipment

    * Developing mechanical solutions from optioneering through detailed design

    * Producing P&IDs, general arrangement drawings, schedules and datasheets

    * Preparing calculations, specifications and procurement documentation

    * Reviewing and approving technical design outputs

    * Supporting site surveys and construction activities

    * Coordinating mechanical design with wider multidisciplinary teams

    * Leading technical workshops and contributing to HAZOP studies

    * Considering constructability, maintainability and whole-life performance

    * Applying CDM requirements and relevant statutory and industry standards

    * Supporting procurement and engagement with supply-chain partners

    * Managing technical deliverables against programme, cost and quality requirements

    * Working closely with clients and project stakeholders

    * Providing technical assurance and guidance to engineering teams

    * Mentoring engineers and sharing technical knowledge and best practice

    About You

    We are looking for experienced Mechanical Design Engineers with strong technical capability and substantial experience within the water and wastewater sector.

    You should have:

    * A degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent discipline

    * Significant mechanical design experience within the water industry

    * Experience designing pumping, process or treatment plant systems

    * Strong understanding of mechanical engineering standards and requirements

    * Experience producing P&IDs, drawings, specifications and technical documentation

    * Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams

    * Knowledge of CDM, constructability and safe, maintainable design

    * Strong client and stakeholder management skills

    * Commercial awareness and an understanding of project delivery requirements

    * Excellent technical communication and problem-solving skills

    Chartered Engineer status, or a clear commitment to achieving chartership, is expected. Membership of a relevant professional institution is desirable.

    Experience working on AMP programmes and major water industry frameworks would be highly advantageous.

    Location & Working Pattern

    Hybrid working is available, with a typical expectation of two to three days per week onsite depending on project requirements.
