How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

We are currently recruiting for a Freelance Works Manager to join a well-established, multi-million-pound civils contractor delivering a number of major infrastructure projects across the North West.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Works Manager with a strong civil engineering background to take responsibility for the successful delivery of enabling works and early-stage construction activities, working closely with the Project Manager, Site Agents, engineers and subcontractors.

    The Role

As Works Manager, you will be responsible for managing day-to-day site operations, ensuring works are delivered safely, efficiently and in accordance with programme, specification and quality requirements.

The role will have a particular focus on enabling works, including the preparation and development of construction areas ahead of the main works.

    Key responsibilities will include:

    - Managing site teams and subcontractors across major civils projects.
    - Overseeing enabling works and site establishment activities.
    - Management and construction of haul roads, access routes and temporary works areas.
    - Coordinating earthworks, excavation, material movements and site logistics.
    - Ensuring plant, labour and materials are effectively planned and utilised.
    - Working closely with Site Engineers to ensure works are constructed to specification.
    - Monitoring progress against programme and identifying potential delays.
    - Coordinating multiple work fronts and subcontract packages.
    - Ensuring RAMS, ITPs and quality requirements are followed.
    - Maintaining high standards of health, safety and environmental compliance.
    - Liaising with the Project Manager, Site Agent and client representatives.
    - Supporting the planning and sequencing of upcoming construction activities.

    About You

The successful candidate will have a strong background in civil engineering and major infrastructure projects, with previous experience managing site operations and enabling works.

    You should have experience with:

    - Major civils/infrastructure schemes.
    - Enabling works and site preparation.
    - Haul road construction and site access.
    - Earthworks and bulk excavation.
    - Temporary works and construction logistics.
    - Managing subcontractors and site teams.
    - Working to demanding programmes and construction schedules.
    - Strong understanding of health & safety and quality requirements.
    - Previous experience working for a main contractor or Tier 1/Tier 2 civils contractor.

SMSTS and CSCS are essential, with relevant temporary works and environmental experience advantageous.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a Freelance Works Manager to join a growing civils contractor and play a key role in the delivery of major infrastructure works across the North West
