How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

An established civil engineering consultancy is seeking a Principal Civil Engineer to join their drainage-focused team on a home-based basis, with just one day per month required in the York office.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced civil engineer to take on a senior, technically led role while enjoying the flexibility of working from home the majority of the time. There is also genuine scope to manage and grow the wider team as the business develops.

    £60,000–£65,000 depending on experience
Home-based working, with only one day per month in the office
The autonomy and seniority of a Principal-level role, with real opportunity to manage and grow the team
The chance to shape drainage strategy on a range of interesting projects
Pension scheme, life insurance and health insurance
    Flexible working hours
A supportive, flexible working culture built on trust, giving you the freedom to manage your own workWhat they're looking for:

Strong background in drainage engineering, with hands-on experience across the following agreements and submissions: S38, S278, TRO, VCO, S106, S104, S185, S98, SN18, S102, and AIP technical submissions.

Technical expertise should also include road, highway, external works and pavement design, vehicle tracking, SuDS maintenance and management plans, SuDS verification reports, and signing and lining.

Candidates should be experienced in flood risk assessment and drainage strategy, combined, foul and surface water drainage design and SuDS, along with design risk assessment and project due diligence. Experience on Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects would be advantageous.

Chartered status (or working towards) with a relevant institution
Proven experience leading and growing a team, with strong mentoring skills
Confidence working independently in a home-based role
Excellent communication skills for client-facing responsibilitiesThis is a rare chance to secure a senior civil engineering role with genuine remote flexibility, real leadership opportunity, and a benefits package to match — without sacrificing the seniority or technical challenge of a Principal position.
