How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Contract Mechanical Design Engineer - Solid Edge

Contract | Mechanical Design | Advanced Engineering | Solid Edge

We are currently seeking an experienced Contract Mechanical Design Engineer to join a specialist engineering team working on complex, high-performance systems within the advanced energy and technology sector.

This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on mechanical designer with strong Solid Edge experience to contribute to technically challenging projects involving complex mechanical assemblies, cryogenic systems, superconducting technologies, test equipment and associated engineering infrastructure.

    The Role

As a Contract Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for developing mechanical components and assemblies from concept through to manufacture, working closely with engineers, technical specialists, manufacturing teams and suppliers.

You will use Solid Edge as a key design tool, producing accurate 3D models and detailed engineering drawings that communicate design intent, manufacturing requirements and operational information.

    Key Responsibilities

Create and develop 3D mechanical models and engineering drawings using Solid Edge.
Produce detailed drawings suitable for manufacture, assembly and inspection.
Develop mechanical components and complex assemblies from initial concept through to delivery.
Lead or contribute to mechanical design activities across engineering projects and programmes.
Work with engineering stakeholders and subject matter experts to define requirements and develop practical design solutions.
Carry out engineering calculations, design verification and analysis, including FEA where appropriate.
Work closely with manufacturing teams, technicians and suppliers to resolve technical issues and optimise designs.
Select appropriate materials and manufacturing processes, including advanced and emerging technologies.
Participate in design reviews and ensure actions are followed through to completion.
Produce technical documentation, calculations, reports and engineering procedures.
Ensure safety, reliability, manufacturability and maintainability are considered throughout the design process.
Work within appropriate engineering standards, regulations and design codes.

    Essential: Solid Edge Experience

Strong, demonstrable experience using Solid Edge is essential for this position.

The successful candidate will be confident using Solid Edge for:

    3D part modelling
    Complex assembly design
    Engineering drawings
    Design modifications and configuration control
    Creation of manufacturing-ready documentation
    Managing complex mechanical design data
Communicating design intent through detailed CAD models and drawingsExperience working within a PLM, PDM or controlled engineering data environment would be highly advantageous.

    About You

We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer who combines strong CAD capability with sound practical engineering judgement.

    You should have:

HNC/HND or degree-level qualification in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent relevant experience.
Strong professional experience using Solid Edge in a mechanical engineering/design environment.
Experience designing complex mechanical components and assemblies.
Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, materials and manufacturing processes.
Experience producing detailed engineering drawings to a high standard.
Experience with engineering calculations and analysis/FEA software.
Experience working on complex engineering projects where problem-solving and attention to detail are critical.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with engineers, technicians, suppliers and other stakeholders.
The ability to work independently while also contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
A structured approach to design, documentation, configuration control and revision management.
Awareness of relevant engineering standards, regulations and safety requirements.Knowledge of electromagnetic principles and their mechanical implications in high-current or superconducting systems would be beneficial, as would experience with cryogenic, vacuum, pressure or other highly engineered systems.

    Working Environment

The role will support technically demanding engineering programmes involving areas such as:

    Fusion and advanced energy technology
    High-temperature superconducting magnet systems
    High-current mechanical systems
    Cryogenic equipment
    Vacuum systems
    Complex mechanical assemblies
    Advanced manufacturing
Engineering test rigs and facilitiesThe role includes significant interaction with engineering, manufacturing and testing teams, so a practical, hands-on approach to mechanical design is highly valued.
