How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Contract: Full-Time, Permanent
    Hours: 37 hours per week, 52 weeks per year
    Salary: £25,989-£27,254 per annum (H4, Hertfordshire salary scale)

    Are you a practical, reliable and hardworking individual looking for a full-time Caretaker position within a friendly primary school?

    Our client is seeking an enthusiastic and proactive School Caretaker to join their team in Borehamwood from September 2026. This is an important role within the school, helping to ensure the site is safe, secure, clean, well-maintained and ready for pupils and staff each day.

    About the School

    Our client is a smaller-than-average primary school with a close-knit community and pupils from EYFS through to Year 6. The school places a strong emphasis on creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for its pupils and staff.

    The successful Caretaker will play a key role in maintaining this environment, working closely with the school's leadership and wider support team.

    The Role

    As Caretaker, your responsibilities will include:

    Ensuring the security and general upkeep of the school site.
    Acting as a key holder and supporting the opening and closing of the premises.
    Carrying out routine maintenance, repairs and basic DIY tasks.
    Completing regular checks of buildings, grounds and facilities.
    Identifying and reporting any maintenance, health and safety or security issues.
    Supporting the safe operation of heating, lighting, alarms and other site systems.
    Moving furniture and equipment and preparing rooms for meetings, activities and school events.
    Maintaining the outdoor areas, playgrounds and grounds to a good standard.
    Liaising with contractors and supporting external maintenance work when required.
    Helping to ensure the school remains a safe, clean and welcoming environment.
    Responding appropriately to emergencies and out-of-hours issues where required.

    The Ideal Candidate

    The school is looking for someone who is:

    Reliable, trustworthy and highly practical.
    Confident carrying out general maintenance and DIY tasks.
    Able to work independently and use their own initiative.
    Organised, proactive and able to prioritise a varied workload.
    Comfortable working both indoors and outdoors.
    Able to communicate effectively with staff, contractors and visitors.
    Committed to maintaining high standards of health, safety and site security.
    Previous experience in school caretaking, premises, facilities, estates or general maintenance would be highly desirable.You do not necessarily need previous school experience if you can demonstrate the practical skills, reliability and attitude required for the role.
