How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Linux Infrastructure Engineer
    Location: IWM Duxford
Salary: £44,000 to £54,000 per annum
Vacancy Type: Permanent, Full Time (36 hours per week)
Closing Date: 6th of September 2026
At Imperial War Museums, we're driven by a shared purpose: helping people understand conflict and its impact on people's lives, from the First World War through to the present day. Our collections contain millions of items, stories and digital assets that preserve some of the most important moments in modern history.
You'll join a collaborative team of technology professionals, curators, archivists and collection specialists who work together to protect and make these collections accessible for future generations. It's a unique opportunity to combine technical expertise with meaningful work that supports one of the world's leading museums of conflict.
    Why This Role Matters
Behind every digital photograph, video recording, oral history and archived document is a technology infrastructure that keeps those assets secure, accessible and protected.
As Linux and Infrastructure Engineer, you'll play a key role in supporting the systems that underpin IWM's Digital Asset Management System (DAMS) and wider digital collections environment. Your work will help ensure critical services remain reliable, resilient and secure, enabling colleagues, researchers and visitors to access and benefit from IWM's invaluable digital collections.
    What You'll Be Doing
    * Support and administer Linux-based infrastructure, ensuring systems remain secure, available and performant.
    * Maintain and develop the infrastructure supporting IWM's Digital Asset Management System and associated archive platforms.
    * Manage storage environments, backups, replication and capacity planning activities to protect critical digital assets.
    * Act as a senior technical escalation point for complex infrastructure, networking and system issues.
    * Support security, patching and compliance activities across the infrastructure estate.
    * Contribute to infrastructure projects, service improvements and technology development initiatives.
    * Work with external suppliers and internal stakeholders to deliver effective technical solutions.
    * Maintain high-quality technical documentation, disaster recovery procedures and operational standards.
    What We're Looking For
We'd love to hear from you if you have:
    * Significant experience supporting and administering Linux environments at 3rd line level.
    * Strong knowledge of Linux administration, including scripting, file systems, permissions and system monitoring.
    * Experience with network file systems such as NFS and SMB.
    * Experience managing storage platforms, backups, replication and capacity planning.
    * Strong troubleshooting skills across servers, infrastructure and networking environments.
    * Experience working with enterprise IT systems and supporting business-critical services.
    * Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
    * Experience balancing operational support responsibilities alongside project work.
    * A security-first approach to infrastructure administration and support.
Experience with Windows Server, Microsoft Azure, Infrastructure as Code tools, backup platforms, DAMS environments or archive systems would be advantageous.
    How You'll Work
You'll work closely with colleagues across IT and AV Services, Collections, Digital Media, Retail and Admissions, helping to deliver reliable technology services across the organisation.
The role combines hands-on technical work with stakeholder engagement, project delivery and continuous improvement activities. You'll also work with external suppliers and specialist partners, helping to shape and support technology solutions that meet the needs of the museum and its collections.
What Success Looks Like (First 6-12 Months)
    * Develop a strong understanding of IWM's infrastructure, digital collections environment and operational priorities.
    * Become a trusted technical expert within the Linux and infrastructure environment.
    * Successfully support and maintain the systems underpinning the DAMS platform and associated storage infrastructure.
    * Deliver improvements that strengthen system performance, resilience and security.
    * Build effective relationships with colleagues, suppliers and stakeholders across the organisation.
    * Contribute to infrastructure projects and long-term technology planning activities.
