How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

We are the Diocese of Manchester, serving a vibrant, dynamic and creative community in the North-West of England. Our vision is to be a worshipping, growing, transforming Christian presence at the heart of every community. Our work is about building a culture of hope and an expectation of growth in our parishes, schools and chaplaincies. We’re looking for talented and innovative people to bring fresh ideas, diversity and inspiration to help us achieve this.

Manchester Diocese has a strong commitment to Safeguarding and we are seeking a suitably qualified individual to join us as we increase capacity in our team.

This is an opportunity to play a key role in ensuring Manchester Diocese delivers effective safeguarding arrangements in line with Church of England policy, statutory guidance and best practice.

As Deputy Diocesan Safeguarding Officer, you will oversee safeguarding casework, manage and develop the safeguarding team, contribute to safeguarding improvement and assurance activity and deputise for the Director of Safeguarding in their absence.

We are looking for someone with excellent communication skills and a strong knowledge of safeguarding legislation, guidance and best practice who is able to assess risk and make sound safeguarding decisions.

You will have a significant experience of effectively managing a challenging and complex caseload relating to safeguarding of both children and vulnerable adults. Demonstrable experience of improving safeguarding practice, culture or service delivery is essential.

This is a full-time role (35 hours per week) that attracts a starting salary of £48,152 with opportunity to move to the top of the band. We offer a generous pension scheme, flexible working, and a strong commitment to professional development.

Although experience of working within the Church of England is not required, the post holder should be sympathetic to the aims and values of the Church.

To apply, please click the APPLY button. Application should be made via a laptop or desktop rather than a mobile device. Please refer to the job pack for further information.

The post will be offered to the successful candidate subject to satisfactory references, proof of eligibility to work in the UK and a DBS check at enhanced level and against the barred lists.

Closing date: Monday, 7 September 2026 at 5:00pm.

A date for interviews is to be confirmed but the venue for these will be St John’s House, (Apply online only) The Rock, Bury BL9 0ND. Further details will be provided to shortlisted candidates
