How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    My client is a leading name in the construction and engineering industry, renowned for delivering high-quality infrastructure projects across the UK. With a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and excellence, they are dedicated to shaping the future of construction. Their HQ in Hertfordshire is at the heart of their operations, driving forward projects that make a significant impact on communities and the environment.

    They are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Design Engineer with a strong background in Civil Engineering and temporary works design to join their team in Hertfordshire.

    Those who have site based experience and TWC would be advantageous.

    Duties

    Lead the design and engineering phases of temporary and permanent works packages across a range of infrastructure and civil engineering projects.

    Develop, review, and approve engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and design deliverables in accordance with relevant standards, codes, and project requirements.

    Provide technical leadership on temporary works solutions, including support systems, excavation works, formwork, falsework, lifting operations, working platforms, and construction sequencing.

    Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including site teams, project managers, permanent works designers, and specialist subcontractors, to ensure designs meet operational, programme, and safety requirements.

    Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and support to junior engineers and designers.

    Conduct site visits and inspections to validate design assumptions, assess compliance, and resolve technical issues during construction.

    Participate in temporary works coordination meetings, risk assessments, constructability reviews, and design reviews.

    Ensure temporary works designs are fully integrated into project delivery plans and comply with CDM regulations, industry standards, and company procedures.

    Support innovation and continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance design efficiency, buildability, and safety performance.

    Keep up to date with the latest developments in temporary works engineering, construction methodologies, and industry best practice.

    Person Specification

    Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline. A Master's degree is desirable.

    Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, or actively working towards chartership.

    Significant experience in structural engineering and temporary works design within the civil engineering or construction industry.

    Strong understanding of temporary works procedures, governance, and design requirements in accordance with relevant British Standards and industry guidance.

    Experience designing a range of temporary works solutions, including excavations, retaining systems, foundations, working platforms, formwork, falsework, and lifting arrangements.

    Proficiency in engineering and design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Tekla Tedds, STAAD Pro, or equivalent analysis tools.

    Strong understanding of construction methodologies, sequencing, and site constraints associated with major infrastructure projects.

    Proven leadership capability with the ability to manage multiple projects and workstreams simultaneously.

    Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence technical decisions and build strong relationships across project teams.

    A proactive approach to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
