How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    About you

If you’ve recently graduated with a degree in Quantity Surveying or a related construction discipline and you’re looking for your first proper step into the commercial side of construction, this could be a really good opportunity for you.

I’m looking for a Graduate Quantity Surveyor to join an established groundworks and civil engineering contractor from their Huntingdon office. Ideally, you’ll have achieved a 2:1 degree or above and be keen to build a long term career within quantity surveying and commercial management.

What I like about this role is that you’re joining a substantial business with a strong project pipeline, rather than taking a graduate role where you could struggle to get meaningful experience. You’ll have the opportunity to learn from an experienced commercial team, get involved with live projects and develop your understanding of how projects are delivered commercially from the ground up.

    Your experience

You’ll ideally have a degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Construction Management or a closely related subject, with a minimum 2:1 preferred.

You don’t need years of experience because this is a genuine Graduate Quantity Surveyor position. What I’m really looking for is someone who has a good understanding of construction, has an interest in the commercial side of projects and wants to learn.

You’ll need to be organised, comfortable working with figures and confident communicating with different people. A good understanding of Microsoft Office would be useful, along with the ability to manage information accurately and pay attention to detail.

Any placement year, internship or previous experience within construction, groundworks, civil engineering or quantity surveying would be advantageous, although it isn’t essential.

What you will be doing with your experience

You’ll work closely with the commercial and project teams, supporting the delivery of live groundworks and civil engineering projects.

This will give you exposure to a broad range of quantity surveying responsibilities, including assisting with cost management, valuations, variations, subcontractor payments, procurement and commercial reporting.

You’ll also have the opportunity to develop your understanding of subcontractor management, reviewing costs, measuring works and helping to ensure projects are delivered within budget.

As you develop, you’ll gradually take on more responsibility and become more involved in the commercial management of your own areas of work. The aim is to give you the experience and support you need to progress your career as a Quantity Surveyor rather than simply bringing you in to carry out administrative tasks.

The role is based from the company’s Huntingdon office, with the opportunity to develop your career within a well established contractor operating across major groundworks, civil engineering, residential, commercial and infrastructure projects.

The salary is £28,000 to £30,000 depending on your background and experience.

    About the business

You’ll be joining a highly established groundworks and civil engineering contractor with a nationwide operation and a turnover of approximately £400 million.

They work with major developers and main contractors across the UK, delivering large scale residential, commercial and infrastructure projects. The business has continued to grow and has a strong pipeline of work, which gives you the opportunity to build your experience within a business where there is genuine scope for progression.

For me, the biggest attraction of this opportunity is the chance to start your quantity surveying career within a sizeable commercial team and learn how major construction projects are managed commercially. You’ll be surrounded by experienced people who can help you develop, while getting exposure to the type of projects that can really strengthen your CV.
