How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

HSE Manager – Construction & Refurbishment

Location: Nottingham, with regular travel to project and client sites
    Salary: £58,000 per annum
Package: Company van, pension, 25 days’ holiday plus bank holidays and additional benefits
    Employment: Permanent

Greys Specialist Recruitment is working with an ambitious and expanding contractor delivering construction and refurbishment projects across commercial, industrial and FMCG environments throughout the UK.

Due to continued growth, the business is recruiting an experienced Health, Safety and Environmental Manager to lead its HSE function and take overall responsibility for HSE strategy, systems, compliance and continuous improvement.

This is a genuine management-level appointment. Applicants must already have extensive experience working as an H&S Manager and hold a NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent Level 6 Health and Safety qualification.

You must also have a proven construction and refurbishment background, including experience supporting work within FMCG or other live operational environments. General manufacturing or facilities experience without substantial construction/refurbishment responsibility will not be sufficient.

    The role

Working closely with directors, project managers, site teams and clients, you will lead the company’s HSE function and ensure consistent standards across multiple construction and refurbishment projects.

The position combines strategic ownership with visible operational involvement. You will be expected to develop systems and report to senior management while remaining confident carrying out site audits, reviewing RAMS, leading investigations and challenging project teams.

    Your responsibilities will include:

    * Leading the company’s Health, Safety and Environmental strategy.

    * Developing, implementing and maintaining HSE policies, procedures and working practices.

    * Ensuring compliance with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act, CDM Regulations and all other relevant UK legislation.

    * Managing and continually improving the company’s HSE management systems.

    * Taking responsibility for ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management systems.

    * Carrying out site audits, inspections and compliance reviews.

    * Leading investigations into accidents, incidents and near misses.

    * Ensuring effective corrective and preventive actions are identified, implemented and monitored.

    * Reviewing and approving risk assessments and method statements.

    * Providing professional HSE advice to directors, project managers and site teams.

    * Delivering health and safety training, inductions and toolbox talks.

    * Monitoring subcontractor performance and compliance with company standards.

    * Producing HSE performance reports and KPI data for senior management.

    * Liaising confidently with clients, external auditors and regulatory bodies.

    Essential experience and qualifications

To be considered, you must have:

    * A NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent Level 6 Health and Safety qualification.

    * Extensive experience working in a dedicated Health and Safety Manager role.

    * A proven background supporting construction and refurbishment projects.

    * Experience within FMCG or another live operational environment.

    * Strong working knowledge of the CDM Regulations.

    * Experience managing and improving ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 systems.

    * Experience leading accident and incident investigations.

    * The ability to review and approve RAMS confidently.

    * Strong leadership, communication and stakeholder-management skills.

    * The credibility to advise and challenge directors, project managers, subcontractors and site teams.

    * The ability and willingness to travel regularly between project sites.

This role will not suit an Advisor seeking their first management appointment unless they can already demonstrate substantial management-level ownership of an HSE function.

    Desirable experience

The following would strengthen your application:

    * Chartered Membership of IOSH or evidence that you are actively working towards CMIOSH.

    * An environmental management qualification.

    * A Lead Auditor qualification.

    Package and benefits

    The successful candidate will receive:

£58,000 annual salary + company van.

    Why apply?

This is an opportunity to take genuine ownership of the HSE function within an expanding contractor delivering varied construction and refurbishment projects.

You will work directly with senior leadership and play a central role in developing the company’s systems, improving performance and supporting its continued growth.

Please apply with an up-to-date CV clearly demonstrating your Level 6 qualification, management-level experience, construction and refurbishment background, work within live operational environments and ownership of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001.

All applications will be handled confidentially. Please contact Max Painter
