How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Campaigns Manager - Energy

    Friends of the Earth Scotland are looking to recruit a confident and committed individual to lead our Energy team. The right person will bring together our staff working on a fair transition away from fossil fuels to publicly owned renewable energy, in pursuit of our strategic aim: to phase out oil and gas production in line with 1.5C and ensuring a just transition, led by and for, affected workers and communities.

    The Energy team is made up of campaigners, organisers and activists, as well as communications and political colleagues. You will provide direct line management to some team members, and leadership, support, and coordination for areas of join work across the team. You will liaise with the Communications Manager and Policy and Advocacy Manager to bring in support from their areas.

    You will also support the Head of Campaigns in the strategic development of campaign plans and objectives and be responsible for supporting and coordinating delivery of those plans within the team.

    This role includes project management of a potential high-pressure piece of strategic litigation in relation to our campaign to stop a new gas-burning power station and carbon capture plant at Peterhead. This is a key piece of work in a long-running campaign with involve working closely with the Head of Campaigns and FoES board.

    Responsibilities: Direct line management of 2/3 members of staff and one consultant. Project team leadership. Responsibility for budget management, including restricted grant budgets.

    Ideal Skills/Qualifications:

    Essential

    * At least 4 years of campaigning experience including developing campaign strategy and work plans to deliver organisational objectives.

    * At least 2 years’ experience managing a small campaigns team

    * Experience monitoring, evaluating and reporting on campaign impact

    * Line management experience

    * Demonstrable experience of public speaking and acting as a media spokesperson in a range of settings to a high level

    * Excellent advocacy and negotiation skills, with a proven ability to influence a range of stakeholders including politicians

    * Ability to manage a varied workload, prioritising and delegating tasks effectively

    * Demonstrable commitment to climate justice, with experience of embedding it at the heart of campaign work

    * Experience managing budgets and reporting to funders

    * Strong oral and written communication skills, including experience writing briefings and reports

    * Knowledge of the Scottish environmental sector and political landscape

    * Knowledge of climate and energy policy

    Desirable

    * Familiarity with Friends of the Earth Scotland, our work and campaigns

    * Experience writing funding applications and reporting to funders

    * Experience using strategic litigation as a campaigning tactic

    * Adaptable approach to changing campaign priorities, with an openness to the role’s focus evolving over time

    Location: Hybrid working arrangements with weekly attendance at one of our offices (Edinburgh or Aberdeen). You will also be expected to undertake regular travel within Scotland and occasional travel in the wider UK/overseas.

    Hours of Work: Permanent, full time (5 days per week or 35 hours) preferred; 4 or 4.5 days per week may be considered. The post may require some work outwith office hours, including weekends, for which time off in lieu is granted. There will be no payment of overtime.

    Salary: £42,500-£45,000 (Full-time equivalent) dependant on experience. This post sits in Band C of our salary bands.
