How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Purpose of the Job:

The primary purpose of the role is to develop schemes from feasibility through to detailed design and construction, ensuring projects are delivered in line with council standards, industry best practices, and within agreed time, cost, and quality constraints. You will report to the Principal Engineering Manager and play a vital role in shaping the borough's infrastructure.

    Key Responsibilities:

Undertake and lead detailed highway design using AutoCAD (2D), including general arrangements, setting out, levels, and construction details.
Support 3D design elements by collaborating with specialists where necessary.
Develop design solutions for major schemes such as junction improvements, cycle infrastructure, public realm upgrades, and corridor enhancements.
Ensure all designs comply with relevant standards (DMRB, TSRGD, Manual for Streets, and local design guidance).
Manage project stages, including feasibility, preliminary design, consultation, detailed design, and construction support.
Coordinate with internal teams, consultants, and contractors to ensure integrated and buildable design solutions.
Prepare and review technical drawings, specifications, reports, and contract documentation.
Support procurement processes, including preparing design information for tender and contractor engagement.

    Job Requirements:

Proficiency in AutoCAD for producing technical drawings.
Experience in delivering highway and transport improvement schemes such as junction upgrades, pedestrian crossings, and cycle schemes.
Understanding of statutory frameworks, regulations, and design guidance for transport and highways design.
Knowledge of traffic engineering principles, including traffic signals and modelling principles.
Ability to manage project budgets and programme for assigned schemes (typically up to £1m or contributing to larger programmes).
Experience in managing consultation exercises with a wide range of stakeholders and the general public.
A degree in a relevant subject or equivalent professional qualification or experience.
Excellent written and spoken presentational skills to convey complex subjects to non-technical audiences.

    Additional Responsibilities:

Carry out site visits, surveys, and inspections to inform design development and ensure successful implementation.
Monitor contractor activities on-site and report on progress, quality, and compliance.
Ensure designs contribute to wider objectives, including sustainability, climate resilience, and urban realm improvement.
Maintain accurate project records, cost estimates, and progress reports.
Support and mentor junior engineers where required.
If you are a skilled Project Design Engineer with extensive experience in highways design and proficient in AutoCAD, we would love to hear from you. Apply now to join our client's dynamic and forward-thinking team
