How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Graduate Structural Engineer – All Experience Levels

An exciting opportunity has arisen in Exeter for a Graduate Structural Engineer, whether you are starting your career or already have relevant industry experience. You will join a highly respected local practice with a strong share of the regional market. Its close-knit team of structural and civil engineers and technicians delivers projects ranging from small domestic commissions to high-profile, multi-million-pound mixed-use developments.
Applications are welcomed from recent graduates with a relevant civil or structural engineering degree, as well as graduate engineers who have gained experience in building structures through employment, placements or internships. You should be keen to develop your technical design skills and confident communicating with colleagues and project stakeholders. More experienced candidates will have opportunities to take greater ownership of design work and client interaction, while less experienced candidates will receive guidance and support from senior engineers.

    Other projects include:

    • Challenging and bespoke residential projects
    • Multi-storey mixed use development
    • Underground car park and foundations
    • 7 storey luxury flats with complex solutions required for foundations

The successful candidate will contribute across the practice’s core workload, including a £25 million waste-to-energy scheme in the South West. Reporting to a company director, you will work at a level appropriate to your experience, building responsibility as your technical knowledge and confidence grow. Excellent attention to detail, organisation and time-management skills are important.

This business has heavily invested in the right staff, software and working environment, an excellent indicator of a progressive local practice.

    Responsibilities

    • Assist with, or take responsibility for, the analysis and detailed design of building structures across a range of sectors, including historic projects with contemporary interventions.
    • Prepare clear design calculations, sketches, reports and technical information using appropriate guidance and software.
    • Undertake site visits and help resolve technical issues, with supervision tailored to your level of experience.
    • Develop practical solutions for site conditions, including sensitive engineering approaches for historic structures.
    • Communicate with contractors, architects, clients and colleagues, building effective professional relationships.
    • Take an active role in your professional development and progression towards chartership; candidates with more experience may also support junior team members.
    About You
    • A degree in civil engineering, structural engineering or a closely related discipline.
    • A genuine interest in building structures and a sound understanding of engineering principles.
    • Good written and verbal communication skills, with a collaborative approach.
    • Care, curiosity and a willingness to learn; relevant design, site or consultancy experience is advantageous but not essential.
    • For candidates with experience, evidence of increasing responsibility in structural design and stakeholder engagement.

    Development and Support

You will receive mentoring, exposure to varied project stages and support for continuing professional development and progression towards chartership. The scope of the role will be tailored to your starting point, giving new graduates a structured introduction to consultancy work while enabling experienced graduates to broaden their technical and project responsibilities.

A competitive salary will be offered according to qualifications and experience, together with a healthy annual bonus. The practice has invested heavily in its people, software and contemporary Exeter office, reflecting its progressive outlook. Flexible working is available, and the business encourages a healthy work-life balance
