How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Your new company
Hays are recruiting on behalf of a large and complex multi-site educational organisation in Bristol with a diverse operational estate. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Engineer (Building Services) to join an established Estates team, providing essential operational and technical support across a live environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining service continuity, compliance and engineering standards across a varied property portfolio.

    Your new role
As a Mechanical Building Services Engineer, you will provide professional engineering support across planned and reactive maintenance, statutory compliance, contractor management, asset management and minor works delivery. Working closely with internal stakeholders, term service contractors and specialist subcontractors, you will ensure mechanical systems remain safe, compliant and fit for purpose.
    Key responsibilities will include:

Providing mechanical technical support and engineering advice across maintenance and operational activities.
Supporting the delivery of planned and reactive maintenance programmes.
Managing contractor and subcontractor performance, ensuring compliance and service excellence.
Supporting statutory compliance activities relating to HVAC, LPHW systems, domestic water services, ventilation systems and mechanical plant.
Undertaking condition surveys, asset inspections and life cycle assessments.
Producing technical specifications, scopes of work, reports and engineering recommendations.
Supporting ACOP L8 compliance, water hygiene management and contractor audits.
Delivering small to medium-sized maintenance and operational projects, including plant replacement, HVAC upgrades and compliance work.
Supporting budget monitoring, contractor management and service improvement initiatives.
Full-time role, Monday to Friday, requires travel across sites (mileage covered). What you'll need to succeed
We are seeking an Estates-side Mechanical Engineer with a strong operation and maintenance background rather than a contractor-side project engineer. This role will suit someone who can quickly integrate into an existing team and provide immediate value within a complex operational environment. You will ideally possess:

Strong experience within building services engineering, estate maintenance and operational environments.
Knowledge of HVAC systems, LPHW systems, domestic water services, mechanical plant, ventilation systems and BMS controls.
    Contractor and subcontractor management experience.
Knowledge of NEC4 Contracts, CEMAR and compliance auditing
Knowledge of statutory compliance, health and safety requirements, ACOP L8 and SFG20 maintenance standards.
Experience undertaking condition surveys, technical inspections and report writing.
Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
The ability to operate independently within a live operational estate.
Technical report writing would be desirable
Experience within higher education estates, NHS estates, Local authority estates, defence estates or research/ innovation campuses.
    What you'll get in return
A competitive rate of pay and 6 months minimum of work.
