Camberley | Data Centre Refurbishment | Freelance
£400 - £500 per day
This is a role for an Electrical Testing / AP Lead who understands the level of control needed on a live data centre project.
You will be working on a data centre refurbishment involving existing technical space, plant upgrades and minor expansion works. The project needs someone who can take ownership of electrical testing, inspection, permits, energisation readiness and Authorised Person duties, while working closely with the wider electrical, commissioning and construction teams.
This is not just a paperwork role. You will be expected to walk the job, understand what has actually been installed, challenge poor standards, coordinate testing activities and make sure electrical systems are safe, compliant and ready to be handed over.
The role would suit someone who has worked as an Electrical AP, Electrical Testing Manager, Electrical Testing Lead, Electrical Supervisor, Electrical Commissioning Engineer, Electrical QA Lead or electrically biased Construction Manager on data centres, critical environments, healthcare, pharmaceutical, industrial, infrastructure or major commercial projects.
Data centre experience would be ideal, but the main requirement is strong electrical testing, AP and site delivery experience in a controlled environment.
What you’ll be doing
You will lead electrical testing and inspection activities across a live data centre refurbishment and plant upgrade project.
You will act as the electrical AP / Authorised Person, managing permits, isolations, switching procedures and safe systems of work in line with project requirements.
You will coordinate testing across LV distribution, switchgear, UPS interfaces, generator interfaces, containment, cabling, small power, lighting, emergency lighting, fire alarm interfaces, BMS interfaces, earthing, bonding and associated critical infrastructure.
You will work closely with Electrical Construction Managers, Project Managers, Commissioning Managers, QA teams, subcontractors, client representatives and specialist testing contractors.
You will plan and manage testing activities around live services, shutdown windows, access restrictions, phased works, plant upgrades and commissioning requirements.
You will review test packs, inspection records, certification, commissioning documentation, redline drawings and handover information.
You will make sure electrical works are inspected properly before testing, with issues raised and closed out before they become commissioning problems.
You will support energisation planning, switching schedules, permit controls, RAMS reviews and safe access arrangements.
You will attend coordination meetings, give testing updates and escalate risks around quality, programme, access, safety or documentation.
You will help drive snag close-out, test sheet completion, QA records and final handover evidence.
What you’ll need
You will need experience as an Electrical AP, Electrical Testing Lead, Electrical Testing Manager, Electrical Supervisor, Electrical QA Lead, Electrical Commissioning Engineer or electrically biased Construction Manager.
You should have strong electrical building services experience, ideally gained with an M&E contractor, electrical contractor, data centre specialist or critical environment contractor.
Experience in data centres would be ideal, but healthcare, pharmaceutical, industrial, infrastructure, energy, commercial refurbishment or other technically controlled environments would also be relevant.
You will need a strong understanding of electrical testing, inspection, certification, energisation, isolations, permits and safe systems of work.
Experience with LV systems, switchgear, UPS, generators, earthing and bonding, emergency lighting, fire alarm interfaces, controls interfaces and commissioning processes would be highly relevant.
You should be comfortable reviewing RAMS, permits, test documentation, QA records, commissioning packs and handover information.
You will need to be confident dealing with subcontractors, testing engineers, APs, commissioning teams, client representatives and senior site leadership.
Electrical trade background, ECS / JIB, 18th Edition and inspection and testing qualifications would be expected.
AP accreditation or previous Authorised Person experience would be strongly preferred.
SSSTS or SMSTS, CSCS / ECS and First Aid would be beneficial.
Experience with Field View, Dalux, Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Aconex, Asite, SharePoint, Bluebeam or similar systems would be useful.
Why this role
This is a strong freelance opportunity on a live data centre project where testing, AP control and energisation planning need proper ownership.
You will be working in a technical environment where the quality of testing and documentation directly affects commissioning, handover and client confidence.
For someone with strong electrical testing and AP experience who wants more data centre exposure, this is a good project to be involved in. You will be close to the work, trusted by the project team and responsible for making sure the electrical systems are safe, compliant and ready to go live.
