How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Heritage Projects Officer (Heritage at Risk)
    Dulverton, Somerset

    About Us

Exmoor National Park is a unique and beautiful part of the country. Our vision is that Exmoor remains a beautiful landscape, leading the response to climate change and nature recovery, a welcoming place for all, as well as a great place to live, work and do business.

Our Heritage at Risk programme plays a vital role in protecting Exmoor's historic environment, identifying vulnerable heritage assets that are at risk through neglect, decay or inappropriate development. Working with owners, partners and local communities, we help safeguard these important sites for future generations through conservation, repair and long-term management.

We are now looking for a Heritage Projects Officer (Heritage at Risk) to join us on a fixed-term contract for 2.5 years. This is a full-time role, although part-time working will also be considered.

    The Benefits

    - Salary of £32,597 - £36,363 per annum (pro rata for part-time)
    - Generous annual leave plus bank holidays (pro rata for part-time)
    - Local Government Pension Scheme
    - Paid sickness, parental and compassionate leave, plus time off for dependants
    - Time off to attend medical appointments
    - Access to trained Mental Health First Aiders and a 24/7 confidential helpline

This is a fantastic opportunity for a heritage or project management, archaeological conservation or building repair professional to join an organisation dedicated to protecting one of England's most treasured landscapes.

You’ll discover a friendly and collaborative team where people genuinely support one another; there are staff forums, study days and National Park networking activities that help create a rewarding and inclusive place to work.

So, if you want to play a key role in protecting Exmoor's rich heritage whilst developing your career in a supportive environment, read on and apply today.

    The Role

As a Heritage Projects Officer, you will develop and deliver our Heritage at Risk programme, helping to protect and conserve the historic environment of Exmoor.

You'll identify vulnerable heritage assets, co-ordinate repair and conservation projects, maintain accurate condition records and work with owners, partners and stakeholders to improve the long-term management of Exmoor's heritage.

Supporting the protection and promotion of the historic environment, you'll identify funding opportunities, contribute to new heritage designations and help make heritage information more accessible to the public.

You will aim to decrease the number of ‘at risk’ heritage assets, increase new heritage designated locations and historical assets, develop the understanding of the historic environment and ensure that all conservation areas are appropriately managed.

    About You

To be considered as our Heritage Projects Officer, you will need:

    - Experience in heritage management, project management, archaeological conservation or building repair
    - A strong understanding of government heritage policies and statutory consents
    - The ability to build effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders
    - Good written communication skills
    - Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office
    - A degree in heritage conservation, archaeology, building conservation or a related discipline

The closing date for this role is 7th September 2026.

Other organisations may call this role Heritage Officer, Historic Environment Officer, Conservation Officer, Archaeology Officer, Building Conservation Officer, Heritage Project Officer, Historic Buildings Officer, or Conservation Project Officer.

Webrecruit and Exmoor National Park Authority are equal opportunities employers, value diversity and are strongly committed to providing equal employment opportunities for all employees and all applicants for employment. Equal opportunities are the only acceptable way to conduct business and we believe that the more inclusive our environments are, the better our work will be.
