How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Our client is one of the leading national building services design consultants operating in the UK. With over 80 years service to the built environment, countless awards recognising their contribution to complex projects and employing circa 150 staff across multiple regional offices, they proudly sit as the MEP consultant of choice for many public and private sector organisations.

    The North Yorkshire office has long held a pivotal position with the company, championing northern based projects whilst also contributing to large scale schemes nationwide collaborating with other regional offices. The business is renowned for their expertise within the health care, education, leisure & retail, and defence sectors amongst others.

    Succession planning provides a challenge to all forward thinking businesses, therefore the hunt is on for a Mechanical Building Services Design Engineer to join the team. With Mechanical Engineers in such high demand but short supply, additional flexibility over the level of Engineer provides the opportunity to recruit the very best fit possible. Applications are invited from Intermediate – Principal Engineer level, responsible for the design, coordination, and delivery of mechanical building services systems across a range of commercial, residential, healthcare, education, industrial, and public sector projects. The role involves developing innovative, sustainable, and technically compliant engineering solutions while working with multidisciplinary design teams, clients, architects, and contractors.

    Key Responsibilities

    * Design HVAC systems

    * Domestic hot and cold water services

    * Above-ground drainage

    * Renewable and low-carbon technologies

    * Public health engineering systems

    * Produce engineering calculations, layouts, schematics, specifications, and technical reports.

    * Develop designs using industry-standard software including AutoCAD, Revit MEP, IES VE, Hevacomp, MagiCAD, or similar.

    * Prepare mechanical services drawings and coordinate designs with electrical, structural, architectural, and civil engineering disciplines.

    * Undertake heating and cooling load calculations, ventilation calculations, pipe sizing, duct sizing, and plant selection.

    * Ensure designs comply with current UK legislation, Building Regulations, CIBSE guidance, British Standards, and client requirements.

    * Attend client meetings, design reviews, and site visits as required.

    * Provide technical support during construction and respond to contractor technical queries.

    * Review contractor drawings, technical submissions, and commissioning documentation.

    * Support project delivery within agreed budgets and programme milestones.

    * Contribute to sustainable building design and energy-efficient engineering solutions.

    * Assist with mentoring graduate and junior engineers where appropriate.

    * Maintain accurate project documentation and design records.

    Qualifications and Experience

    * Degree (BEng/MEng) or HNC/HND in Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.

    * Experience in mechanical building services design within a consultancy or contractor environment.

    * Working knowledge of UK Building Regulations and CIBSE guidance.

    * Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.

    * Understanding of Revit MEP/BIM workflows.

    * Strong knowledge of HVAC and public health building services systems.

    * Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

    * Ability to manage multiple projects and work to deadlines.

    * Membership of CIBSE, IMechE, or another relevant professional institution.

    * Working towards or already Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

    * Experience using IES VE, Hevacomp, MagiCAD, Revit MEP, or similar design software.

    * Familiarity with BREEAM, NABERS UK, Passivhaus, and Net Zero Carbon design principles.

    * Knowledge of CDM Regulations and health and safety requirements.

    The appointed Engineer can look forward to working on interesting projects in a supportive environment, where excellence is rewarded and career pathways are open to all employees to advance and challenge themselves
