How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

The British Academy, the UK's national body for the humanities and social sciences, is seeking an experienced and motivated HR Manager (Employee Resourcing) to join our friendly and professional HR team.

Reporting to the Head of Human Resources, this is a key role within a small HR function that supports approximately 180 employees across the Academy. You will take lead responsibility for employee resourcing services, ensuring the effective delivery of recruitment, onboarding, payroll, pensions, benefits and HR systems administration, while contributing to the development and implementation of the Academy's People Strategy.

You will manage and develop a small team comprising an HR Officer and HR Assistant, fostering a high-performing and customer-focused service. Working closely with managers and colleagues across the organisation, you will provide expert advice and guidance on recruitment, reward, benefits, visa sponsorship and related HR policies and procedures.

The role also offers the opportunity to lead on the continued development of the Academy's HR management information system, including the implementation of new functionality and employee self-service tools. In addition, you will support annual pay processes, working with external payroll and pension providers and providing analytical and administrative support for pay negotiations and the Remuneration Committee.

We are looking for a resilient and collaborative HR professional with significant experience in employee resourcing and operational HR management. You will be an effective communicator with excellent organisational skills, strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem solving. Experience managing recruitment processes, payroll and benefits administration, HR systems and policy development is essential, together with a sound understanding of employment law and HR best practice.

The British Academy is a values-led organisation committed to collaboration, creativity, empathy, excellence, integrity, resilience and respect. We place a strong emphasis on employee engagement, wellbeing, equality, diversity and inclusion, and are proud that in our most recent staff survey, 88% of employees said they were proud to work for the Academy and 82% would recommend it as a great place to work.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a respected national institution and play a key role in supporting and developing our people as we continue to deliver our mission of advancing the humanities and social sciences for the benefit of society
