Role Summary
We are seeking a scientifically curious and highly motivated Research Officer to join our team. This is an exceptional opportunity for a recent PhD graduate to pivot away from bench-based science into a dynamic role in research strategy and management in the rare disease field. In this role you will gain hands-on experience accelerating treatment developments and ensuring their access for patients. You will leverage your scientific training within a small multi-disciplinary team to evaluate research landscapes, explore new medical technologies, synthesise complex literature, work with other stakeholders and help to manage our global research grant portfolio, with a goal to have real world impact. You will also serve as a vital liaison between the Foundation and our international network of clinical, academic and commercial collaborators. Key Responsibilities
1. Scientific Analyses and Insights
- Conduct deep research to map emerging therapeutic modalities, target mechanisms, and research gaps in citrin deficiency.
- Distil highly technical data into strategic briefs for stakeholders and decision makers.
- Work within a multi-disciplinary team to produce clear accurate scientific communications for internal and external audiences.
2. Scientific Grant Portfolio Management
- Contribute to management of Foundation-funded research projects, including peer review, project management, budgets, and milestones delivery, in alignment with our research strategy.
- Work closely with academic investigators, clinical collaborators and industry partners to maintain research oversight.
3. Strategic and Operational Support
- Support the team in overcoming logistical or regulatory bottlenecks in translational research projects.
- Execute across a wide spectrum of foundation activities, including supporting the scientific supervisory board, patient engagement, international seminars and conferences.
About You
Essential Skills and Experience
- PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Medicine or a related field.
- The ability to assimilate and critically evaluate complex scientific literature outside of your immediate area of expertise.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, engaging with and adapting content appropriately for both leading experts and lay stakeholders.
- Strong organisational skills to manage multiple complex projects and competing priorities with high level of attention to detail.
- An adaptable, entrepreneurial and “can-do” mindset, with the ability to take initiative, work proactively, and operate collaboratively and independently in a lean multi-disciplinary team.
- Patient-centred, empathetic, and discreet, with a deep commitment to the mission of improving outcomes in the rare disease space.
Desirable
- Experience with the mechanics or administration of research funding.
- Experience inherited metabolic disorders or rare disease translation.
- Established track record of peer-reviewed publications or conference presentations.
- Experience working within a multi-stakeholder research charity.
