As a wordings specialist you will be based within the Customer Oversight team, supporting the business by ensuring that policy wordings and contractual documentation are drafted, reviewed, negotiated and agreed to a consistently high standard. The role is accountable for ensuring that all wordings accurately reflect the intended insurance cover, align with the syndicates risk appetite, and are clear, fair and not misleading, in accordance with regulatory and legislative requirements. As well as supporting Underwriters and brokers you will also work directly with clients to ensure that policy documentation represents the cover agreed and clearly articulates the scope of insured risks.
• Reviewing, negotiating and agreeing policy wordings and contractual documentation in a timely manner, maintaining expert knowledge of insurance contracts and London Market practice.
• Drafting and reviewing policy wordings, clauses, summaries of cover and application forms to ensure clarity, consistency and compliance with legal, regulatory, reinsurance and internal governance requirements.
• Ensuring that policy documentation is unambiguous and does not provide broader cover than intended or agreed.
• Working closely with Underwriting teams and third parties to agree, sign off and implement new or amended wordings and policy documentation.
• Acting as a specialist referral point and coach for wordings-related matters, enabling underwriting teams through guidance, constructive challenge and the sharing of technical expertise.
• Proactively identifying potential contractual, wording or market issues and implementing practical, commercially viable solutions at an early stage.
• Managing the progress and ownership of wording negotiations, including maintaining accountability for wordings returned to brokers until final agreement is reached.
• Liaising with underwriters and claims teams on technical wording issues to support effective underwriting decisions and claims outcomes.
• Contributing to product development activity through market research, insight and analysis of emerging trends and practices.
• Ensuring documentation meets Lloyd’s requirements and reflects market best practice, underwriting standards and internal controls.
• Supporting regulatory compliance activities, including thematic reviews, regulatory queries and returns, with a focus on fair customer outcomes and commerciality.
• Maintaining and developing internal wordings resources, repositories and guidance materials.
You will need
• In-depth understanding of insurance contracts, policy wordings and customer communications.
• Strong knowledge of regulatory and contractual considerations in multi-jurisdictional insurance transactions, including US surplus lines and other non-admitted business.
• A commercial mindset, with the ability to balance legal and regulatory requirements with business objectives.
• Confidence to make informed decisions on coverage issues and to articulate and defend those decisions to build consensus.
• Strong knowledge of London Market wordings, including reinsurance.
• Experience engaging with Lloyd’s and/or regulators.
• Excellent drafting skills and a high standard of written English.
• Exceptional attention to detail, with the ability to identify and address issues efficiently and effectively.
• Strong ability to interpret and apply regulatory requirements to practical scenarios, developing compliant and commercially sound solutions.
