How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Our client, an organisation of renown, is seeking a qualified Patent Attorney with strong in-house experience to join its IP team.

Working at the intersection of technology, innovation and business strategy, you will help shape and deliver an IP approach that supports the organisation's long-term commercial objectives. This is far more than a traditional patent drafting and prosecution role; it is an opportunity to become a trusted adviser to the business, working with technical experts, senior stakeholders and external partners to identify opportunities, influence decisions and ensure IP delivers meaningful commercial value.

    The Role

As Patent Attorney, you will take ownership of a diverse patent portfolio, balancing technical expertise with commercial judgement to ensure IP activity supports wider business priorities. Your responsibilities will include:

    • Managing your own patent portfolio, including developing filing strategies, overseeing deadlines and making informed decisions on patent protection.
    • Drafting, filing and prosecuting patent applications before the European Patent Office and UK Intellectual Property Office, working closely with inventors and external patent counsel where appropriate.
    • Proactively identifying and assessing new inventions, providing guidance on patentability and helping determine how best to protect valuable innovation.
    • Building strong relationships with engineers, researchers, business leaders and external advisers to provide commercially focused IP guidance.
    • Supporting invention capture activities by engaging with technical teams and encouraging a culture where innovation is recognised and protected.
    • Developing and delivering IP communication, awareness and training initiatives across the organisation.
    • Contributing to wider IP strategy through portfolio analysis, reporting, data management and other strategic initiatives.

Our client is looking for someone who brings more than technical excellence. While a strong background in patent law, drafting and prosecution is essential, they are seeking an individual who can add value beyond the technical aspects of the role. You will have proven in-house experience and understand the unique demands of operating within a business environment, where intellectual property decisions must be aligned with commercial priorities, innovation goals and wider organisational strategy. You should enjoy building trusted relationships both internally and externally, whether partnering with inventors to uncover new opportunities, working with external patent counsel or advising senior leaders on strategic IP matters. You are approachable, curious and proactive, with the confidence to challenge thinking, offer new perspectives and help shape the future direction of the organisation's IP strategy.

This role will suit a Patent Attorney who is looking to make a broader strategic contribution, someone who enjoys operating beyond a purely transactional role and is motivated by understanding the bigger picture, identifying opportunities and helping the business maximise the value of its innovation.

    Skills and Experience

    The successful candidate will have:

    • Significant in-house Patent Attorney experience within a technology-driven organisation.
    • Qualification as both a European Patent Attorney and UK Patent Attorney, or have reached finals standard and be working towards qualification.
    • Experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications before the European Patent Office and UK Intellectual Property Office.
    • Strong knowledge of UK and European patent law and practice.
    • The ability to independently manage a varied patent portfolio while balancing legal, technical and commercial considerations.
    • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage effectively with technical, commercial and legal stakeholders at all levels.
    • A collaborative and strategic mindset, with a genuine interest in helping shape innovation and business outcomes.
    • Experience using AI-enabled tools to support patent drafting and prosecution would be advantageous.

    Qualifications

    • Degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering or a related technical discipline.
    • A PhD in a relevant field would be desirable.
    • Qualified European Patent Attorney and UK Patent Attorney, or candidates who have reached finals standard.

This is a unique opportunity to join a globally recognised organisation where innovation is central to business success. You will work alongside leading technical experts and senior stakeholders, helping to shape the future direction of IP rather than simply supporting it.

For the right individual, this role offers the opportunity to combine deep technical expertise with strategic thinking, relationship building and commercial influence. If you are an experienced in-house Patent Attorney who wants to make a broader impact, bring fresh ideas and become a valued partner to the business, this could be an excellent next step.
