How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Quantity Surveyor

Oxford (hybrid, 2 to 3 days on site)

    £70,000 to £75,000 + £6,000 car allowance + 8% bonus

A wastewater framework near Oxford is building out its commercial team, and alongside a more senior hire there is room for a QS a bit earlier in the trade.

This is a good opportunity if you have two or three years in on infrastructure, you have handled subcontract accounts and payments, and you want to do it somewhere the work is committed for years rather than the length of one job.

You would be working next to an experienced Managing QS, which is the part that matters at this stage. You learn how a framework is actually run, and there is a clear route toward owning your own CVRs.

    A few things worth knowing:

    • On site two or three days a week, remote otherwise, with an office near London or in the Midlands if you want one.
    • The employer is a family-owned contractor in its 75th year, Platinum Investors in People, with a long history in water.
    • The works themselves are worth seeing: phosphorus removal, digestion tanks producing biomass for local farms, gas generation built in.

    What you would be doing

    • Preparing valuations and applications for payment.
    • Administering subcontractor and supplier accounts through to final account.
    • Managing procurement schedules, supporting change and keeping the records straight.
    • Measuring quantities against the standard methods.

    What you need

    • Around 2 to 3 years commercial experience on infrastructure projects, as an Assistant QS, QS or similar.
    • Subcontract and supply-chain administration, including processing payments.
    • Working knowledge of NEC contracts.
    • A tier-one or major contractor background.

If your experience is JCT-only, maintenance or fit-out, this will not be the right one, and I will tell you so rather than waste your time.

    How to take it further

Email me, Will McCaffrey, at will@embstalent.co.uk. Send whatever CV you have.

Two stages: a technical conversation over Teams, then a face-to-face at the office. Everyone who meets the four points above will hear back.
