How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Parkinson Gray Associates delivers a proven service to some of the leading Consulting Engineering and Contracting businesses within the British construction industry, predominantly across the Building Services, Energy and Sustainability sectors.

Our client is an independent Building Services Engineering Consultancy with a reputation built on technical excellence, trust and delivering intelligent engineering solutions for some of the UK’s most challenging building projects.

Unlike many large corporate consultancies, they have retained the culture and agility of an independent engineering practice, allowing their engineers to have a genuine influence on design decisions, project direction and the future development of the business.

Established for over 25 years, the consultancy has grown through technical capability, repeat client relationships and a commitment to engineering quality rather than simply project volume. Their teams work across a wide range of sectors, including commercial developments, education, healthcare, residential, leisure, and science and technology environments, delivering coordinated Mechanical, Electrical, and specialist engineering solutions.

The business is built around the belief that exceptional buildings come from exceptional engineering. Their approach combines traditional engineering fundamentals with modern digital design methods, sustainability principles and innovative solutions that respond to the challenges of reducing energy consumption and achieving increasingly ambitious carbon targets.

With offices across the UK, their Manchester team has developed a strong reputation for delivering technically demanding projects throughout the region and beyond. The office provides an environment where experienced engineers are trusted with responsibility, encouraged to challenge conventional thinking and given the opportunity to shape solutions from concept stage through to completion.

As part of their continued growth strategy, they are now seeking an Associate Electrical Designer to join the Manchester office and become a key figure within their Electrical Engineering team.

    Location: Manchester (City Centre)
Salary: £60,000 to £70,000 (depending on experience)
    Employment type: Permanent

    Purpose of the Role:

The Associate Electrical Designer will be a senior technical appointment within the Manchester team, responsible for leading electrical engineering solutions across a varied portfolio of high-quality building projects.

This role is designed for an experienced Principal Electrical Engineer or existing Associate who wants more than project delivery responsibility. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to influence engineering strategy, develop junior talent, support client relationships and contribute to the continued growth of the electrical discipline.

Working alongside experienced Mechanical, Electrical and Sustainability specialists, you will be responsible for developing technically robust solutions that consider energy performance, operational requirements, construction constraints and long-term building performance.

You will lead electrical design activities from early-stage concept development through to detailed design and project completion, acting as a trusted technical advisor to clients, architects, contractors and internal project teams.

The role will also involve supporting the development of engineering standards, improving design processes and mentoring the next generation of electrical engineers within the business.

This is an opportunity for an engineer who still enjoys being close to the technical detail but wants their experience, judgement and ideas to have a wider impact.

As an Associate Electrical Designer, you’ll need to have:

    • Extensive experience delivering electrical building services design within a consultancy environment, ideally with 10+ years’ experience and exposure to complex projects.

    • Strong understanding of electrical engineering principles, including LV distribution, power systems, lighting, emergency systems, small power, containment and electrical infrastructure.

    • Experience taking ownership of electrical design packages and guiding projects from initial concept through to completion.

    • Previous experience working within a Building Services Design Consultancy environment with the ability to manage competing technical requirements.

    • Understanding of how electrical design contributes towards energy efficiency, decarbonisation and modern low-carbon building solutions.

    • Experience using industry-standard design tools, including Revit MEP, AutoCAD and electrical calculation software.

    • Confidence communicating with clients, architects, contractors and wider project teams, providing clear technical advice and solutions.

    • Ability to mentor engineers, support team development and contribute positively to a collaborative technical culture.

    • Understanding of project delivery, fee management, resource planning and the importance of delivering value-driven engineering solutions.

    • Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or active progression towards professional accreditation would be advantageous.

If you are an experienced Electrical Design Engineer looking for a role where your technical expertise will be recognised, your ideas will influence projects and you can become a key part of an established engineering consultancy’s continued growth, this could be the opportunity you have been looking for.

All applicants must be eligible to work and live in the UK
