How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    About the Role

    An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Section Engineer to join a major highways construction project in Grays, Essex. Reporting to the Sub Agent or Site Agent, you will play a key role in delivering complex highway and civil engineering works, ensuring projects are completed safely, on programme, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

    This role is ideal for an engineer with strong technical knowledge, excellent leadership skills, and experience delivering major infrastructure projects.

    Key Responsibilities

    Manage the engineering delivery of a designated section of works.
    Lead and mentor Site Engineers and Engineering Assistants.
    Ensure works are carried out safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved drawings and specifications.
    Coordinate engineering activities across multiple work fronts.
    Review and approve setting out information and ensure engineering controls are maintained.
    Ensure Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), Quality Check Sheets, and handover documentation are completed accurately and on time.
    Review and approve method statements and risk assessments, ensuring compliance throughout delivery.
    Monitor construction progress and provide regular updates to the project team.
    Coordinate subcontractors, suppliers, and direct labour to maintain programme.
    Liaise with the client, designers, and other disciplines to resolve technical issues and coordinate interfaces.
    Ensure design changes are communicated and implemented effectively.
    Support commercial teams with quantities, take-offs, change management, and records of additional works.
    Promote a positive safety culture and ensure compliance with all health, safety, and environmental procedures.
    Maintain accurate site records, diaries, as-built information, and progress reporting.Requirements

    Essential

    Degree or HNC/HND in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
    Previous experience as a Section Engineer on major highways or civil engineering projects.
    Strong knowledge of highways construction techniques and engineering best practice.
    Experience managing engineering teams and supervising subcontractors.
    Excellent understanding of setting out using GPS, total stations, and surveying equipment.
    Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and contract documentation.
    Experience with quality assurance processes, including ITPs and handover documentation.
    Good commercial awareness, including measurement, material take-offs, and change control.
    Strong communication and organisational skills.
    CSCS Card.
    Full UK Driving Licence.Desirable

    Experience working on National Highways or other major infrastructure projects.
    SMSTS or SSSTS qualification.
    Temporary Works Coordinator or Supervisor training.
    First Aid at Work.
    Membership of ICE or actively working towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status.
