How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    We’re looking for an experienced Senior or Principal Bridge Engineer to take ownership of critical packages of work for bridges and structural projects. This hybrid role is based from Birmingham, Reading, Leeds, or Manchester, with the flexibility to travel to sites as required. If you’re a Chartered Engineer with hands-on experience in bridge design and post-tensioning projects, this is an excellent opportunity to lead high-profile initiatives.

    Salary
    Inside IR35 – Initial 6–12 month contract.

    Location and Working Pattern
    Hybrid working from Birmingham, Reading, Leeds, or Manchester offices, with site travel as required for National Highways PTSI programmes, including night and day shifts.

    Our client is a leading engineering consultancy with a strong reputation for delivering innovative solutions to complex infrastructure challenges.

    Responsibilities
    Lead the delivery of small to medium work packages, including inspection, assessment, design, and renewal schemes
    Provide technical leadership, checking, and approval on designs, calculations, and reports
    Offer mentorship and guidance to junior engineers, developing team capability
    Act as a key liaison with clients and multidisciplinary project teams
    Ensure compliance with industry standards, specifications, and governance processes
    Contribute to planning, risk management, and commercial compliance
    Attend sites on an ad-hoc basis for PTSI programmes, including night or day shifts
    Provide on-site supervision for PTSI activities in line with CS 465, ensuring accurate event logging and compliance
    Produce PTSI interpretative reports following site supervisionMust-have Requirements
    Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent)
    Chartered Engineer status (CEng MICE or MIStructE)
    Significant experience with post-tensioned concrete bridges
    Strong background in bridge or structural design, assessment, and asset management
    Proven ability to lead technical delivery on major projects
    Knowledge of relevant design codes and analytical methods
    Effective communicator comfortable working across multi-disciplinary teamsNice-to-have Skills
    Experience with Local Authority or rail-related structures
    Familiarity with asset management systems and inspection regimes
    Previous experience as CRE, checker, or design lead
