How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Health & Safety Lead

    Location: Manchester / Merseyside
    Job Type: 3-Month Contract (Potential Extension)
    Rate: Competitive (DOE)

    Health & Safety Lead - Rail & Civil Engineering

    An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Health & Safety Lead to join a leading civil engineering contractor delivering major rail and infrastructure projects across the Manchester and Merseyside region.

    This is an initial 3-month contract with the possibility of extension, offering the opportunity to play a key role in supporting the safe delivery of high-profile civil engineering and rail works. The successful candidate will work closely with operational teams, project managers and subcontractors to drive a positive safety culture and ensure full compliance with health and safety legislation and company procedures.

    The Role

    As Health & Safety Lead, you will provide expert health and safety leadership across multiple live projects. You will support project teams through regular site visits, audits and inspections while promoting best practice and continuous improvement throughout the business.

    This is a hands-on role requiring an experienced professional who is confident influencing operational teams, challenging unsafe behaviours and ensuring projects are delivered safely, compliantly and efficiently.

    Key Responsibilities

    Lead and promote a positive health and safety culture across rail and civil engineering projects.
    Provide professional health and safety advice to site management teams and senior leadership.
    Carry out regular site inspections, audits and compliance reviews.
    Ensure compliance with current UK Health & Safety legislation and company procedures.
    Review and provide guidance on RAMS, safe systems of work and construction methodologies.
    Support project teams with risk assessments and hazard identification.
    Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
    Produce detailed audit reports and monitor the close-out of corrective actions.
    Monitor subcontractor health and safety performance and compliance.
    Deliver toolbox talks, safety briefings and behavioural safety initiatives.
    Liaise with clients, regulators and external stakeholders where required.
    Support continuous improvement of health and safety management systems.

    Requirements

    To be considered, you should have:

    Previous experience as a Health & Safety Lead, Health & Safety Manager or Senior Health & Safety Advisor.
    Strong rail and civil engineering experience is essential.
    Excellent knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation.
    Experience carrying out site audits, inspections and incident investigations.
    Strong understanding of CDM Regulations and Principal Contractor environments.
    Experience reviewing RAMS and supporting high-risk construction activities.
    Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
    Ability to influence and build strong relationships with operational teams.
    Full UK Driving Licence.

    Qualifications

    NEBOSH General or Construction Certificate (essential)
    IOSH Membership or equivalent
    Chartered Membership (CMIOSH) desirable but not essential
    CSCS Card (preferred)
