How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Hays Education are working in partnership with a welcoming and well-regarded secondary school in Darwen to recruit a dedicated Science Technician to join their science department.

This is a part-time position, Monday to Friday, working 4 hours per day and the role is available for an immediate start or from September.

The school is seeking someone with previous experience in a Science Technician or similar laboratory-based role, although they would also be keen to hear from experienced Science Teachers who are looking to step away from classroom teaching and move into a technician role while remaining within an educational environment.

    Your new role

Prepare, set up and clear away equipment, materials and chemicals for practical science lessons across Biology, Chemistry and Physics
Support teaching staff in delivering engaging and safe practical experiments in line with the curriculum
Ensure all laboratory equipment is maintained, cleaned, stored correctly and available for use when required
Conduct routine checks, maintenance and stock control of laboratory resources and equipment
Order and monitor science consumables and supplies, ensuring departments remain well stocked.
Adhere to health and safety regulations, including COSHH requirements and risk assessment procedures.
Prepare chemical solutions and materials in accordance with departmental guidance and safety standards.
Assist with the organisation and maintenance of science laboratories, prep rooms and storage areas
Support staff and students during practical activities where appropriate.
Keep accurate records of inventory, equipment maintenance and health and safety checks.
Assist with displays, science events and departmental projects as required.

    What you'll need to succeed

Previous experience working as a Science Technician, Laboratory Technician or in a similar scientific support role.
Experience working within a school setting would be highly advantageous.
Strong understanding of laboratory procedures, equipment and health and safety regulations.
Good organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
Excellent attention to detail and a proactive approach to work.
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a wider school team.
Confident communication skills and the ability to build positive working relationships with staff and students.
A science-related qualification would be beneficial but is not essential.
Applications are welcomed from qualified Science Teachers seeking a transition away from classroom teaching into a technician position.
Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one through Hays.
