How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

UK Power Networks are looking for a Senior Cable/Circuit Designer to join Capital Programme - Engineering Design, based at our Crawley, Matthew's Yard office. This is a permanent opportunity reporting to the Design Lead, offering a salary of £84,160 plus car and bonus. The closing date for applications is 11 August 2026.

In this role, you will produce circuit designs from scopes provided by Project Managers, customers or the Design Lead, including project costings that meet customer requirements for time, quality and budget. The schemes may cover APP and Connections work, including both non-contestable and contestable projects, and must follow UK Power Networks design standards. You will collaborate closely with Project Managers, Electrical and Civil Designers, PDC and Alliance members to deliver regulated network solutions that comply with design, CDM and wider industry standards.

You will be responsible for producing circuit designs below ground and in air that can be constructed safely and in line with company standards, CDM requirements, relevant Codes of Practice, legislation and industry regulations. You will oversee and contribute to technical, commercial and contractual documents for procurement, support design assurance and audit processes, and mentor Trainee, Graduate and Engineer colleagues to develop their technical knowledge and experience. You will also fulfil the role of Principal Designer for allocated schemes, helping to ensure hazards are eliminated or reduced and that remaining risks are managed appropriately.

This is an opportunity to play a senior role in a dedicated team of Designers, Estimators and Planners, providing an excellent service to customers and supporting a smooth process from initial enquiry through to final connection and business closure. You will work with operational teams, UKPN designers, CAD teams, wayleaves and consents specialists, survey companies, external engineering organisations and customers or stakeholders to identify feasible routes, produce design drawings suitable for construction, resolve circuit network issues and represent UK Power Networks to best effect.

We are looking for someone with a Civil or Circuit Engineering degree and proven relevant Cable, OHL and substation experience, supported by a circuit engineering background and extensive experience in EHV circuit design and construction works, ideally within the utility sector. You will bring strong knowledge of company standards, policies, circuit and civil engineering developments, safety culture and CDM Regulations, including IOSH training. You should be able to work unsupervised, set and meet your own targets, identify innovative cost-saving solutions, work well within a team and communicate clearly in writing and verbally. Strong Microsoft Word, Excel, Project and PowerPoint skills are required, along with experience of cable sizing, rating and pulling calculations for 11kV to 132kV networks, solidly and cross-bonded circuits, joint and pulling bay design, route proving, Bills of Materials including cable drum lengths, and the ability to sign off designs.

If you are an experienced cable or circuit design professional who can deliver safe, compliant and constructible network designs while supporting customers, colleagues and project teams, we would like to hear from you. Apply by 11 August 2026 to be considered for this Senior Cable/Circuit Designer opportunity
