How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Charlton Recruitment is proud to be recruiting on behalf of HS2 Ltd for an Engineering Manager to lead the engineering delivery of Birmingham Interchange Station, one of the UK's most ambitious new railway stations.
    This is a rare opportunity to influence the design and delivery of a nationally significant transport hub from detailed design through to construction and commissioning. You'll work client side, providing technical leadership and engineering assurance across a complex, multidisciplinary programme that will transform transport connectivity across the West Midlands.
    If you're currently an Engineering Manager, Senior Project Engineer, Design Manager, Designated Project Engineer OR Contract Engineering Manager or similar with major infrastructure or rail experience, this is an opportunity to step into one of the highest profile engineering leadership roles in UK infrastructure.
    The Project
    Birmingham Interchange will become one of the UK's flagship railway stations and a major gateway to the HS2 network.
    The £370 million programme will deliver: Four 415-metre high speed platforms, An architecturally significant station building with an iconic roof structure, Major highway and bridge infrastructure, large multi storey car park, fully integrated transport hub, Seamless connections with Birmingham Airport, Birmingham International Station and the NEC via the Automated People Mover.
    One of the UK's first major railway stations designed to achieve BEEAM Excellent environmental standards.
    The project presents significant engineering challenges across civil engineering, structures, station systems, rail systems, building management systems, MEP services and transport integration.
    The Role
    Reporting to the Head of Engineering, you will provide engineering leadership throughout the design, assurance and delivery lifecycle of Birmingham Interchange station with an emphasis on civils & structures – Bridges, platform Island, car park, roof
    Initially, your focus will be leading engineering assurance through redesign and detailed design, ensuring technical excellence, robust engineering governance and successful integration across multiple engineering disciplines.
    As the programme progresses, you'll play a leading role supporting construction delivery before building and developing your own engineering team.
    Working client side gives you the opportunity to influence engineering decisions from the outset while collaborating with consultants, contractors and senior stakeholders to ensure the station is delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest technical standards.
    Key Responsibilities
    * Lead engineering assurance throughout the full project lifecycle from design through construction.
    * Manage the technical review and approval of design submissions.
    * Ensure engineering solutions comply with statutory requirements, technical standards and Employer's Requirements.
    * Provide engineering governance and technical leadership across the project.
    * Coordinate complex interfaces between civil engineering, structures, station systems, rail systems, building management systems, MEP services and the Automated People Mover.
    * Drive integration between neighbouring contracts and wider HS2 infrastructure.
    * Work closely with designers, consultants and contractors to deliver coordinated engineering solutions.
    * Identify engineering risks and support mitigation strategies alongside project and commercial teams.
    * Manage relationships with key stakeholders including Birmingham Airport, the Department for Transport, Arden Cross, the West Midlands Combined Authority and local authorities.
    * Support the transition from design into construction, ensuring technical continuity throughout delivery.
    * Recruit, mentor and develop Project Engineers as the engineering team expands.
    About You
    You'll have experience delivering major infrastructure projects where technical assurance, engineering governance and multidisciplinary design management have been central to your role.
    Applications are welcomed from candidates working client side, within engineering consultancies or major contractors.
    You'll ideally have:
    * Experience leading engineering delivery on major infrastructure projects valued at £100 million or more such as rail, highways, airports, nuclear, stations
    * Strong understanding of design management and technical assurance.
    * Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams.
    * Knowledge of systems integration & system engineering to help integrate - structures, station systems, rail systems, MEP services, building management systems and automated transport systems.
    * Excellent stakeholder management skills across clients, contractors, consultants and public sector organisations.
    * The ability to manage engineering risk while driving programme delivery.
    * Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards professional registration would be advantageous but is not essential.
