How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Are you an experienced CNC Sliding Head Setter / Operator looking to join a world-class precision engineering manufacturer?

    Do you have experience with Star Sliding Head machines, Fanuc controls, and producing high-quality precision components to tight tolerances?

    We're supporting a leading manufacturing business in Portsmouth who are looking to recruit a CNC Sliding Head Setter / Operator to join their growing Machine Shop team.

    This is an excellent opportunity to join a company investing heavily in its people, technology and manufacturing capability while producing precision-engineered components supplied to industries across the globe.

    What's the role all about?

    As a CNC Sliding Head Setter / Operator, you'll be responsible for setting and operating CNC Sliding Head lathes, producing precision components to the highest quality standards.

    Working as part of an experienced machining team, you'll ensure machines are set correctly, components meet specification and production targets are achieved while maintaining exceptional levels of quality and accuracy.

    This is a hands-on role where attention to detail, problem-solving skills and a proactive approach are highly valued.

    Key responsibilities

    Set and operate CNC Sliding Head lathes, preferably Star machines

    Produce precision-engineered components to tight tolerances

    Read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation

    Carry out first-off, in-process and final inspections using precision measuring equipment

    Use micrometers, verniers, gauges and other inspection equipment to verify component quality

    Monitor machining performance and make adjustments where required

    Carry out routine machine maintenance and basic troubleshooting

    Maintain accurate production and quality records

    Work closely with colleagues to support production performance and continuous improvement

    Maintain high standards of housekeeping, quality and health & safety
    What you'll need

    To succeed in this role, you'll bring:

    Previous experience setting and operating CNC Sliding Head lathes

    Experience with Star Sliding Head machines or similar

    Strong knowledge of Fanuc controls

    Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings

    Experience using precision measuring equipment

    Excellent attention to detail

    Strong commitment to producing high-quality work

    A proactive and team-focused approach
    Desirable

    Experience programming CNC Sliding Head machines

    Background within precision engineering, aerospace or electronics manufacturing

    Knowledge of continuous improvement principles

    Experience working to ISO or AS9100 quality standards
