How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

Heads-Up: We really appreciate a short introductory cover note explaining why this opportunity caught your eye.
    Who We Are
Action Sustainability is a leading sustainability consultancy helping organisations create lasting environmental and social impact.
Working with organisations including the NHS and Houses of Parliament, we combine expert consultancy, innovative technology and award-winning learning solutions to accelerate sustainable change across industries.
Our bespoke digital learning platforms support thousands of professionals every day, and our engineering team plays a central role in continuously improving those experiences.
We're an accredited Living Wage employer recognised by Best Companies as a "One to Watch", with a genuine commitment to wellbeing, professional development and creating an environment where people can do their best work.
    About the Role
This is a hands-on development role where you'll help build, improve and maintain the technology powering our digital learning platforms.
Working as part of a close-knit product team, you'll contribute across the full development lifecycle, from building responsive user interfaces through to developing robust backend functionality and helping shape the future direction of our products.
You'll work with modern technologies, collaborate closely with designers, product managers and stakeholders, and make extensive use of AI-assisted development tools to improve quality and productivity.
    What You'll Be Working On
We believe developers should influence products, not simply complete tickets.
You'll play an active role in delivering major roadmap projects across our customised Moodle learning platform, developing new functionality, improving user experience and helping thousands of learners access world-class sustainability education.
You'll contribute ideas, solve meaningful technical challenges and work alongside a collaborative team that values innovation and continuous improvement.
    Key Responsibilities
    • Develop modern, responsive front-end experiences from detailed design specifications.
    • Write clean, reusable and maintainable PHP and JavaScript code.
    • Build and enhance functionality across our customised Moodle platform.
    • Perform code reviews and contribute to engineering best practice.
    • Support fellow developers through collaboration and knowledge sharing.
    • Maintain high software quality through testing and continuous improvement.
    • Write and maintain unit tests and Behat tests where appropriate.
    • Work closely with designers, product managers and engineers throughout delivery.
    • Participate in Agile ceremonies and collaborative planning sessions.
    System Management & Support
    • Troubleshoot application issues and optimise performance.
    • Support scalability, reliability and maintainability across the platform.
    • Ensure compliance with accessibility standards, GDPR and secure development practices.
    • Contribute to quality assurance activities and maintain data integrity.
    Continuous Improvement
    • Help improve user experience through product enhancements.
    • Introduce new ideas, tools and development approaches.
    • Embrace AI-assisted development to improve productivity and code quality.
    • Contribute to an engineering culture focused on continuous learning and improvement.
    About You
You'll enjoy solving problems, building quality software and collaborating with people across technical and non-technical teams.
You're equally comfortable developing front-end experiences and backend functionality, and you're motivated by creating products that deliver real-world impact.
    You'll likely bring:
    • Commercial experience as a Full Stack Developer within a professional software environment.
    • Strong HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and PHP development skills.
    • Experience working with MySQL and/or PostgreSQL.
    • Good understanding of Git version control.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities within an Agile environment.
    • Experience with Moodle would be advantageous but isn't essential.
    • Interest in AI-assisted development and modern engineering practices.
    Why Join Us?
You'll be joining a genuinely purpose-driven organisation where technology directly supports sustainability and education.
    Alongside meaningful work, you'll enjoy:
    • Competitive salary.
    • Hybrid working.
    • 8% employer pension contribution.
    • Profit share scheme when company targets are achieved.
    • Discretionary bonus.
    • Fitness allowance.
    • Enhanced maternity and paternity benefits.
    • Volunteer days.
    • Mental health and wellbeing support.
    • Professional memberships and tailored development programmes.
    • Modern Old Street office with café, lounge, gym and rooftop terrace.
