We are seeking a passionate and motivated Functional Skills English Tutor to join the education team at HMP The Mount, delivering high-quality Functional Skills English qualifications from Entry Level 1 through to Level 2.
As a Functional Skills English Tutor, you will play a vital role in supporting learners on their rehabilitation journey, helping them develop the literacy, communication and employability skills needed to progress into further learning, training and sustainable employment. Working with small groups of learners, you will create an engaging and inclusive learning environment that encourages achievement, personal development and positive change.

Key Responsibilities
Teaching, Learning & Curriculum Delivery

Deliver City & Guilds Functional Skills English qualifications from Entry Level 1 to Level 2.
Plan and deliver engaging, innovative and learner-focused lessons that support achievement and progression.
Create schemes of work and lesson plans that meet awarding body and curriculum requirements.
Conduct initial assessments and utilise BKSB diagnostic tools to identify learner starting points.
Develop, implement and regularly review Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
Differentiate teaching methods to meet a diverse range of learning styles, abilities and educational backgrounds.
Use digital learning resources and adaptive teaching strategies to maximise learner engagement.
Deliver high-quality teaching and learning to groups of up to 12 learners. Learner Progress & Support

Motivate and inspire learners to achieve their full potential.
Track, monitor and record learner progress accurately.
Prepare learners for examinations, controlled assessments and achievement milestones.
Support learners with additional learning needs and implement reasonable adjustments where appropriate.
Provide constructive feedback that encourages continuous improvement.
Promote learner confidence, resilience, self-belief and independent learning. Literacy, Employability & Personal Development

Promote literacy development and reading for pleasure throughout the prison environment.
Embed employability skills, communication skills and personal development within lessons.
Support learners to develop the knowledge and behaviours required for successful progression into employment and further education.
Encourage positive attitudes towards learning and personal achievement. Quality Assurance, Safeguarding & Compliance

Maintain accurate learner records, attendance data and achievement documentation.
Ensure delivery meets quality standards, awarding body requirements and organisational expectations.
Support quality improvement initiatives and self-assessment activities.
Promote safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion at all times.
Work within prison security procedures, policies and operational requirements.
Contribute to inspection readiness and continuous improvement activities. Partnership Working

Work collaboratively with prison staff, learning support practitioners and employability teams.
Support learner reviews, case conferences and progression planning.
Build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Contribute positively to the wider Education, Skills & Work provision. Essential Criteria

Level 3 qualification in English.
Teaching qualification at Level 5 or above (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS or equivalent), or willingness to work towards one.
Experience delivering Functional Skills English qualifications.
Strong lesson planning, classroom management and learner engagement skills.
Ability to adapt teaching approaches to meet diverse learner needs.
Experience supporting learners to achieve positive educational outcomes.
Excellent communication, organisational and administrative skills.
Commitment to safeguarding, equality, diversity and learner success.
Ability to motivate and inspire learners from a range of backgrounds and abilities. Desirable Criteria

Experience working within prison education, adult learning or further education.
Experience using BKSB or similar diagnostic assessment tools.
Knowledge of Ofsted's Education Inspection Framework (EIF).
Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) qualification or willingness to work towards achieving one.
Experience supporting learners with additional learning needs.
Understanding of rehabilitation-focused education and learner progression pathways. Personal Attributes
