About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated General Foreman to join one of our growing civil engineering and groundworks contractors. This is an excellent opportunity for a strong site leader to oversee the successful delivery of multiple groundworks packages while managing a workforce of approximately 40 groundworkers across a range of commercial and infrastructure projects.
The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, on programme, and to the highest quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Lead, supervise, and coordinate a team of approximately 40 groundworkers and subcontractors.
Plan and manage daily site activities to achieve programme milestones.
Ensure all work is carried out safely and in accordance with company policies and statutory regulations.
Conduct daily briefings, toolbox talks, and site inductions.
Allocate labour, plant, and materials effectively to maximise productivity.
Monitor workmanship and maintain high quality standards throughout the project.
Liaise closely with Site Managers, Project Managers, Engineers, clients, and subcontractors.
Identify and resolve site issues before they impact programme or budget.
Ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, and project documentation.
Maintain accurate site records, including labour returns, plant usage, and daily progress reports.
Promote a positive safety culture and maintain high standards of housekeeping across all work areas.
Essential Requirements
Proven experience as a General Foreman within civil engineering and groundworks.
Demonstrable experience managing large site teams of 30–40 operatives or more.
Strong knowledge of groundworks including:
Foundations
Drainage
Roads and sewers
Earthworks
Concrete works
External works
Excellent leadership, organisational, and communication skills.
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
Strong understanding of health, safety, environmental, and quality requirements.
Full UK Driving Licence.
Preferred Qualifications
SSSTS or SMSTS
CSCS Gold or Black Card
First Aid at Work
Temporary Works Awareness
CPCS or NPORS (desirable)
