How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

Embedded Electronics Design Engineer – Hardware & Firmware

    Location: Banbury
Working pattern: Hybrid – up to 2 days working from home
    Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
    Job type: Permanent

    Overview:

We are currently working with a global technology business to recruit an Embedded Electronics Design Engineer for its R&D team in Banbury, Oxfordshire.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with experience in embedded systems, electronics design and firmware development to work on innovative technology used in advanced industrial applications worldwide.

The role combines embedded C, microcontroller development, electronic hardware design, PCB design, analogue and digital electronics, power electronics and product development.

You will work across the full product lifecycle, from initial specification and design through to prototyping, testing, production support and continuous product improvement.

This role would suit an engineer who enjoys working across both hardware and firmware and wants to develop their career within a technically diverse, hands-on R&D environment.

You do not need to be an expert in every technology listed below. The key requirement is a strong foundation in embedded systems, Embedded C and electronics design, together with the enthusiasm to develop across the wider product development lifecycle.

    The Role

As an Embedded Electronics Design Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting the design, development, testing and improvement of advanced embedded electronic products.
    Embedded Firmware Development
Develop embedded firmware using C for microcontroller-based systems.
Work with embedded processors including PIC, Arduino and ARM Cortex-M platforms.
Develop, test and debug embedded software.
Diagnose and resolve hardware and firmware faults.
Develop and maintain communications interfaces including RS232, RS485, SPI, I²C and Ethernet.
    Electronics and Hardware Design

Design and develop electronic hardware for new and existing products.
Produce schematics and PCB layouts using Altium Designer, Proteus or similar tools.
Design and develop analogue and digital electronic circuits.
Work with ADC and DAC interfaces.
Support power electronics design, including DC-DC converters and constant-current circuits up to 60V.
Consider EMC, reliability, manufacturability and production requirements throughout the design process.
Maintain PCB BOMs, design revisions and technical documentation.
    Product Development, Prototyping and Testing
Support the full product lifecycle from initial specification through to production and ongoing product support.
Build, prototype and test new design concepts.
Support product verification, validation and fault-finding activities.
Develop and support production and laboratory test equipment and test rigs.
Contribute to product improvements, technical investigations and continuous improvement projects.
    Support design-for-manufacture and design-for-assembly activities.
    Multidisciplinary Engineering

Work closely with electronics, firmware, mechanical, production and service engineering teams.
Support component selection and liaise with suppliers and subcontractors.
Contribute to technical investigations and product improvement projects.
Support mechanical integration and rapid prototyping activities, including 3D printing and 3D CAD where appropriate.
Provide technical support to production and service teams when required.
Occasional UK and international travel may be required.
    Essential Experience

Degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems or a related discipline, with typically 2+ years' relevant industry experience.
Alternatively, an HNC/HND in Electronics Engineering with relevant commercial experience.
Experience developing embedded firmware using C.
Experience working with microcontrollers or embedded processors.
Practical experience of analogue and digital electronics design.
Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout using Altium, Proteus or similar electronic design software.
Understanding of embedded systems and microcontroller-based design.
Experience debugging electronic hardware and embedded software.
Knowledge of serial communications such as RS232, RS485, SPI, I²C or Ethernet.
Understanding of EMC design principles and compliance considerations.
Ability to produce clear technical documentation and engineering reports.
Practical soldering experience with both through-hole (PTH) and surface-mount (SMD) components.
Full UK driving licence and eligibility to work in the UK.
    Desirable Experience

Experience in any of the following would be beneficial:
    LabVIEW and data acquisition systems.
Python, C# or other programming languages.
Power electronics, DC-DC converters or constant-current circuits.
Electrical wiring, including single-phase and three-phase systems.
    FMEA, DFM or DFA.
    3D CAD, particularly SolidWorks.
    Mechanical integration and rapid prototyping.
Electrical test equipment and product validation.
Working within a multidisciplinary R&D or product development environment.
Project planning or project management tools.
    The Person

You will be a practical, inquisitive and technically minded engineer who enjoys understanding how things work and solving complex engineering problems.
You will be comfortable working hands-on in a laboratory and engineering environment while also taking ownership of your own design work and collaborating with colleagues across the business.
The successful candidate is likely to be:
Strong in technical problem solving and fault finding.
Comfortable working across both hardware and firmware.
Practical and hands-on in their approach.
Able to take ownership of engineering tasks and work packages.
Keen to learn new technologies and develop their technical capability.
Comfortable working within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
Able to communicate technical information clearly.
    What Is on Offer?

    Competitive salary based on experience.
    Hybrid working arrangements.
25 days' annual leave plus bank holidays.
    Contributory pension scheme.
    Life insurance.
    Ongoing technical training and development.
Exposure to innovative international engineering projects.
Opportunity to work across embedded systems, electronics, firmware and power electronics.
Genuine opportunities for technical development and career progression within a global technology business.
