How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Are you looking for a hands-on, site-based role where safety, reliability and practical problem-solving make a visible difference every day? UK Power Networks Services is looking for a Substation Inspector to join our team based from Gatwick, supporting the safe inspection, maintenance and care of substations across the Services region.

Reporting to the Site Supervisor, you will work within the UKPN Services directorate as a permanent employee. This role offers a salary of £38,832 plus a 3% bonus. As the work is required to be carried out on site, blended working is not available. The closing date for applications is 28/07/2026.

You will play an important role in the safe delivery of the Inspection and Maintenance Programme, working either as part of a team or independently across the Services geographical area. The role involves carrying out the full range of tasks associated with substation inspections and vegetation management at substation voltages up to 33kV, helping to keep critical infrastructure safe, compliant and operational.

You'll work as part of a team or as a lone worker, in the Services geographical area, carrying out the full range of tasks associated with Substation Inspections and vegetation management at substation voltages up to 33kV.

Your duties will include inspection and non-intrusive diagnostic testing of all plant and apparatus associated with the HV and LV distribution network, fault location and repair of minor plant defects, taking oil samples where required for diagnostic testing from HV plant, and using hand-held IT equipment to capture and manage information. You will demonstrate a safety culture that embraces the UKPNS Stay Safe programme, oversee maintenance, project and subcontract staff within your working party, assist the team with maintenance and project-based work, and be prepared to support other sections during organisational changes, system emergencies or other operational needs in line with your experience.

You will also clean substation internals, including plant and apparatus associated with the HV and LV distribution network under UKPN Services' guardianship. This will include dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping and cleaning internal windows, completing additional site visits to meet ESQC Regulations, carrying out HV and LV meter reading, pruning or removing vegetation from external substation compounds by manual, mechanical or chemical control, and undertaking touch-up redecoration tasks within substations.

You will be safety-focused, enthusiastic, willing to work as part of a team or independently, and keen to learn and develop new techniques. Any company-specific training required for the role will be provided.

If you are ready to take on a practical, safety-critical role supporting essential electrical infrastructure, we would like to hear from you. Apply by 28/07/2026 to be considered for the Substation Inspector opportunity at UK Power Networks Services
