How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Your responsibilities as Mid-Level Python Software Engineer
    * Develop, test and maintain secure, reliable software using Python together with JavaScript or TypeScript
    * Contribute to solution design, ensuring applications remain scalable, maintainable and aligned with modern cloud architecture
    * Participate in code reviews, automated testing and continuous improvement of engineering standards
    * Collaborate with Product, QA, DevOps and UX teams to deliver high-quality software through Agile sprints
    * Work alongside senior technical colleagues to strengthen engineering capability and adopt best practice
    * Support the ongoing enhancement of digital platforms that underpin critical energy systems
    What we're looking for in a Mid-Level Python Software Engineer
    * Commercial experience developing applications with Python and frameworks such as Django alongside JavaScript or TypeScript
    * Experience working within cloud environments including AWS, Azure or Google Cloud Platform
    * Strong understanding of software engineering principles, version control and CI/CD practices
    * Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent practical experience
    * Exposure to technologies such as React, Node.js, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, Celery, Infrastructure as Code or database optimisation would be advantageous
    Working hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday with hybrid working (2 days per week in the Birmingham office).
