How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Penrose Veterinary Group

We are looking for a Veterinary Surgeon to join our team at Penrose Veterinary Group in Colchester.

    Salary: £55,000+ depending on experience

For over 35 years, Penrose Veterinary Group has been providing exceptional veterinary care to pets and their owners across Colchester and the surrounding community. We are proud of the experienced team we have built and the compassionate, collaborative culture that makes Penrose a genuinely rewarding place to work.

We believe great veterinary care comes from great people. That means creating an environment where Veterinary Surgeons feel trusted, supported, and empowered to deliver the very best care for their patients while continuing to develop their own clinical interests.

As part of Kin Vet Community, a small collective of like-minded community veterinary practices, we benefit from shared expertise, collaboration, and investment while retaining the individuality, autonomy, and culture that makes Penrose unique. You’ll have the opportunity to be part of something bigger while still feeling part of a close-knit team.

    About the Role

We are looking for a Veterinary Surgeon who enjoys delivering high-quality first-opinion care and wants to be part of a supportive, experienced clinical team.

This role offers variety, clinical freedom, and the opportunity to work up cases thoroughly with the support of excellent nursing colleagues and modern diagnostic facilities.

    Your caseload will include:

    • General consultations and preventative healthcare
    • Medical case work-ups and ongoing management
    • Routine soft tissue surgery
    • Urgent and emergency presentations
    • More complex cases including GDVs, septic abdomens, and exploratory laparotomies

Whether you are an experienced Veterinary Surgeon looking for a supportive long-term home, or someone wanting to continue developing your confidence and skills, we can offer an environment where you can thrive.

    Why Join Penrose?

At Penrose, you’ll be joining a team that values clinical excellence, teamwork, and making a genuine difference.

    You will benefit from:

    • A friendly, experienced, and supportive clinical team
    • Excellent RVN support and strong nursing involvement
    • A varied and interesting first-opinion caseload
    • Clinical freedom and the opportunity to develop your own interests
    • Modern facilities and diagnostic equipment including digital radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy, and bronchoscopy
    • A culture where your ideas and expertise are valued

    Your Development Matters

We are committed to helping our team grow and achieve their ambitions.

    You will receive:

    • £2,000 annual CPD allowance
    • Support towards certificates and clinical interests
    • Mentoring and knowledge sharing from experienced colleagues
    • Opportunities for career progression and leadership development
    • Access to the wider support and expertise of Kin Vet Community

    About You

We are looking for a Veterinary Surgeon who:

    • Is confident managing a varied first-opinion caseload
    • Has a compassionate and client-focused approach
    • Enjoys working collaboratively within a team
    • Wants to provide high standards of patient care
    • Is keen to continue developing clinically

We welcome applications from Veterinary Surgeons at different stages of their career and would love to discuss how Penrose can support your goals.

A Place Where You Can Make a Difference

At Penrose, you are not just another team member — you are part of a practice that genuinely values its people.

With a supportive culture, excellent facilities, interesting clinical work, and opportunities to grow, Penrose offers the chance to build a fulfilling veterinary career while making a meaningful difference every day.
